Durham Cathedral Library and Collections

The Cathedral houses the largest in situ medieval library in the UK, with manuscripts dating from the 6th century. It also maintains a large collection of early printed volumes across a variety of subjects, as well as a modern theology library.

The catalogue of the incunabula is available online via Copac as part of the Durham University Library catalogue.

Accessing materials

Can I obtain items via Inter Library Loan? No.

Can I visit the library to view materials?

The Sharp Library and Chapter Library, based in the Monks' Dormitory at Durham Cathedral, is open to diocesan readers and members of Durham University. It will be open Monday to Friday, 10.00am - 4.30pm (last entrance 4.00pm). Library visitors will need to sign in at the Welcome Desk in the Monks' Dormitory and present their Diocesan Reader card or Durham University card to access the Library.

Access to Durham Cathedral's special collections, including the Refectory early printed book, music, and antiquary collections, is by appointment only. Please contact the Library at 0191 386 2489 / library@durhamcathedral.co.uk to make an appointment.

Access to Durham Cathedral's medieval manuscript collection is also by appointment only, Monday to Friday, 9.00am - 4.45pm. Please contact the Library at 0191 386 2489 / library@durhamcathedral.co.uk to make an appointment.
