      Summary
      • A history of acoustics from the 19th century to the present, written by one of the pre-eminent members of the acoustical community. The book is both a review of the major scientific advances in acoustics as well as an account of famous acousticians and their discoveries, taking in the development of the Acoustical Society of America. Acoustics is distinguished by its interdisciplinary nature and the book duly explores the fields development in its relationship to other sciences. In addition to covering the history of acoustics, the book concludes with the future of acoustics. Beautifully illustrated.
      • Review: "No one has ever presented such a large body of materials related to the history of acoustics. The bountiful exposition of experiments, instruments and theory ensures that this book will be a necessary reference for anyone interested in the last two hundred years of acoustics." --Annals of Science The History of Science and Technology from the Thirteenth Century "I found this book fascinating to read. The material is well chosen, the writing is clear and elegant, and the book is illustrated with figures taken from the original publications of the people concerned. For those who want to delve deeper, the early chapters have around 100 references each, and the later ones around 200. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the development of our subject - and that should be all of you!" --Acoustics Australia

      Summary
      • How did Paris and its musical landscape influence Verdi's La traviata? In this book, Emilio Sala re-examines La traviata in the cultural context of the French capital in the mid-nineteenth century. Verdi arrived in Paris in 1847 and stayed for almost two years: there, he began his relationship with Giuseppina Strepponi and assiduously attended performances at the popular theatres, whose plays made frequent use of incidental music to intensify emotion and render certain dramatic moments memorable to the audience. It is in one of these popular theatres that Verdi probably witnessed one of the first performances of Dumas fils' La Dame aux camelias, which became hugely successful in 1852. Making use of primary source material, including unpublished musical works, journal articles and rare documents and images, Sala's close examination of the incidental music of La Dame aux camelias - and its musical context - offers an invaluable interpretation of La traviata's modernity.
      • Review: 'An intriguing and well-written work of musical detection, [excellently] translated.' Classical Music 'Sala's methodology draws on both ethnomusicology and musicology in his endeavours to consider the 'contextualization of the text' as much as the 'textualization of the context'. In this finely controlled and often intriguing analysis, he undoubtedly succeeds in demonstrating La traviata not just as a product of Verdi's imagination, but as a subtle refashioning of the sounds of Paris itself in the 1840s and 1850s.' Summary
In this finely controlled and often intriguing analysis, he undoubtedly succeeds in demonstrating La traviata not just as a product of Verdi's imagination, but as a subtle refashioning of the sounds of Paris itself in the 1840s and 1850s.' • First published in the original Italian as Il valzer delle camelie: echi di Parigi nella Traviata by Emilio Sala.
It is in one of these popular theatres that Verdi probably witnessed one of the first performances of Dumas fils' La Dame aux camélias, which became hugely successful in 1852. Making use of primary source material, including unpublished musical works, journal articles and rare documents and images, Sala's close examination of the incidental music of La Dame aux camélias - and its musical context - offers an invaluable interpretation of La traviata's modernity.

      Summary
      • The new edition of this popular classroom anthology brings together the best recent essays by distinguished geographers on region, music and their interrelatedness. While emphasizing the regional nature of American music, the book introduces geographical concepts such as location factors, spatial organization, distribution, and diffusion. The study follows the paths of four types of American folk and popular music: gospel, country, jazz, and rock from their origins to their geographic centers. The contributors include Thomas Arkell, R.W. Butler, James R. Curtis, Larry Ford, Jon A. Glasgow, Charles F. Gritzner, A.D. Horsley, Robert Kuhlken, John Lehr, Christopher Lornell, Rocky Sexton.
      • Review: Carney is to be applauded for persisting in what appears to be a particularly isolated field of study. . . . provides a solid overview of the field while, hopefully, laying the groundwork for future developments in the geography of music. It is recommended to all cultural geographers.--Richard Francaviglia, University of Texas

      Summary
      • This work is an instrumental investigation into phonetic aspects of Qur'anic recitation as performed in Egypt today. Particular attention is given to comparisons between styles, voice registers, and trained and untrained performers. Chapter I explains the aim, scope and outline of the study. Chapters II to VI present an historical background to the Qur'an, the discipline of Tajwid, styles of recitation as performed in Egypt today, the informants' educational background (religious and artistic) and the material recorded by the subjects and the recording procedures. Chapters VII and VIII present the results of our instrumental investigation of voice registers and vowel prolongation. While 'voice register' is not subject to prescriptive rules of Tajwid, 'vowel prolongation' is (at least in principle) subject to very specific rules concerning phonetic contexts and degree of prolongation. Chapter VII presents the results of the measurements undertaken and provides information concerning pitch range, the 'resonance balance' and 'open quotient' in the various registers. Chapter VIII deals with the phonetic environments for vowel prolongation, the scholars' analyses of these environments, and analyses the results of the present investigation in comparison with previous studies.
      • Review: "... recommended to any Arabist or general linguist with a desire to find out more about this fascinating and, in the West, comparatively little studied field..." - Prof. Bruce Ingham University of London "A fascinating, informative, and culturally enriching book.... Though essentially a technical study of specific aspects of vowel duration in Qur'anic recitation by Egyptians, in reality the book offers a great deal more..." - Prof. Lucy Collard University of Westminster"

      Summary
      • Between 1873 and 1935, reformers in Chicago used the power of music to unify the diverse peoples of the metropolis. These musical progressives emphasized the capacity of music to transcend differences among various groups. Sounds of Reform looks at the history of efforts to propagate this vision and the resulting encounters between activists and ethnic, immigrant, and working-class residents.Musical progressives sponsored free concerts and music lessons at neighborhood parks and settlement houses, organized music festivals and neighborhood dances, and used the radio waves as part of an unprecedented effort to advance civic engagement. European classical music, ragtime, jazz, and popular American song all figured into the musical progressives' mission. For residents with ideas about music as a tool of self-determination, musical progressivism could be problematic as well as empowering. The resulting struggles and negotiations between reformers and residents transformed the public culture of Chicago. Through his innovative examination of the role of music in the history of progressivism, Derek Vaillant offers a new perspective on the cultural politics of music and American society.
      • Review: Vaillant's principal characters--musicians, reformers, immigrant and African American Chicagoans seeking pleasure and power--come across as complex human beings and not simply stand-ins for general concepts. This book makes a major contribution to our understanding of the ambiguous legacy of progressivism and the meaning of cultural conflict in twentieth-century America.(Frank Couvares, Amherst College)

      Summary
      • The village well has run dry. The livestock are dying. Trusting their instinct, most of the villagers leave and head south. Rahne (Isaka Sawadogo), the only literate one, decides to head east. His wife, three children, some goats and Chamelle, a dromedary, are his only riches. Rahne and his family travel across hostile lands under a lethal sun, walking endlessly onwards and frequently crossing paths with death. Not only is there no water but civil war has also broken out. Will Rahne and his family find aid?

Sounds of satire, echoes of madness : performance and evaluation in Cefalonia, Greece. / [By Pollatou, Efpraxia.]

      Summary
      • Abstract: This thesis is about the construction of 'satire' as an exclusive practice among the Cefalonian and hence proposes the term satiricity (satirikotita). It explores the construction of the category of the Cefalonian "madman" by means of dialogics between performance and evaluation. It is observed that the relation depends on three principles that obtain among audience members and a performer: conditioning the performance, participation in and observation of the performance and evaluation of it. Being one of the few anthropological studies on the Ionian islands of Greece, this thesis aims to contribute to the anthropology of the Ionian islands and of Cefalonia in particular. It looks at the relation between a town and a village on the ground of teasing events and refutes the argument of satire as an urban phenomenon only. It sets the elementary principles towards anthropology of satire and emphasizes the importance of studying everyday teasing events. It also contributes to understanding a 'native' researcher's presence in different ways. Satiricity is seen as a 'par excellence' feature that Cefalonians have. No matter if Cefalonia is a part of the Greek nation-state and people follow 'modern Greek culture', they still employ satiricity as a way of distancing themselves from Greeks. 'Distance' is forged on the basis of absolute exclusion of Greeks from having, practising and understanding satiricity in the way that Cefalonians do. The Conclusions leave the ground open for more investigation on teasing events and application of such viewpoints around other areas of the island, and of the Ionian islands or other Greek islands. I also point to studies looking at island and mainland teasing events and potential differences. After all, we need to examine not only how people construct the claim on the exclusivity of 'satire'. We need to examine how such a claim is applied, supported or contrasted and possibly rejected when Cefalonians engage with other Greeks away from the island.

The Sounds of Satyagraha : Mahatma Gandhi s Use of Sung-Prayers and Ritual. / [By Snodgrass, Cynthia.]

      Summary
      • Abstract: The Sounds of Satyagraha: Gandhi s Use of Sung-Prayers and Ritual M.K. Gandhi s work towards Indian independence was influenced significantly by sung-prayers found in a collection entitled Ashram Bhajanavali, a collection which, in turn, gives fresh insight into the satyagraha movement. Gandhi s employment of sung-prayers, chant, and ritual has, however, gone unrecognized until this time. The Sounds of Satyagraha presents detailed information concerning how formative and how important these sung-prayers were to Gandhi and to the national independence movement. Chapter One sets forth this thesis, along with methodology, historical context, and certain terms defined. Chapter Two consists of a preliminary historical overview of the Ashram Bhajanavali, along with a descriptive summary of the sung-prayer materials found within it. (An analysis of ritual practices presented in Chapters 3 through 5 also provides additional information regarding historical context and development.) This collection of chanted prayers used by the Indian sayagraha community, has sometimes been referred to as a hymnal. However, the collection is much more than what the word "hymnal" might imply, both in the scope of its contents, and in its significance as a tool with which to understand the developments of Gandhi s satyagraha community. Chapters Three, Four, and Five examine in detail how the Ashram Bhajanavali was used in ritual contexts, and how these sung-prayers supported Gandhi and the nation in its work for social change. The ritual theory of Roy Rappaport is utilized to discover the Bhajanavali s sitz im leben. Chapter 3 discusses the use of these sung-prayers in ritual prayer meetings that occurred twice daily. Chapter 4 looks at additional ways in which these songs were used by Gandhi and the satyagraha community to achieve their purposes, as the movement grew into a national initiative. Chapter 5 considers how it is that this sung-prayer repertoire, being specifically sung and chanted (rather than spoken or read), had a significant power for India and appeal for the satyagraha communities. By placing this collection in its historical, social, and ritual contexts, the extent to which these sung-prayers influenced and shaped Gandhi s sayagraha in India becomes clear. Chapter 6 considers the life and work of one spiritual musician, Shri Karunamayee Abrol, who teaches the Ashram Bhajanavali, its melodies and its history. Shri Karunamayee s family were freedom fighters, and, as a child, she sang for Mahatma Gandhi, receiving his blessing. Shri Karunamayee represents a living tradition. Inspired by childhood experiences and her respect for Gandhi, she has a special devotion to this repertoire. As a spiritual musician, she is a "tradition-bearer" of the Ashram Bhajanavali. The chanting of these sung-prayers has been her daily devotional ritual for decades. Her teaching, which stems from both musical knowledge and ?????? experience, provides additional insight into satyagraha. Chapter Seven concludes with a review of the evidence, illustrating the large extent to which Gandhi was guided by the sung-prayers and principles found in the Ashram Bhajanavali collection. It also consists of reflections in an analysis of the success or failure of satyagraha. Ashram Bhajanavali offers insight into the Indian independence movement, which has not been acknowledged or identified previously. Final reflections place this collection within the on-going East-West dialogue, indicating its continuing importance in the current discussion.

The sounds of silence: American history textbook representations of non-violence and the Abolition Movement.

      Summary
      • AbstractIn this paper we examine how the Abolition Movement’s approach to non-violent resistance has been silenced in four American history textbooks. Despite extensive research that reveals an extensive network of groups dedicated to the peaceful abolishment of slavery little of this historical record is included in the textbooks. Instead, a skewed representation of the movement is conveyed to the reader, one that conveys an image of a movement that contributes to a climate of social violence. Through a critical discourse analytical approach to the data we carefully deconstruct how this process of misrepresentation occurs. By employing the discursive tools of narrative framing, positioning, and stance we lift up what is often hidden from the reader and demonstrate how language use communicates powerful social messaging to the reader. We argue that student readers are left with an impoverished sense of how non-violent democratic change has occurred when presented with a limited portrayal of the Abolition Movement. We therefore emphasize the importance of equipping students with the skills needed to critically interrogate both historical and contemporary sources that purports to convey the inevitability of war to resolve complex social problems; we maintain this is both an educational imperative and a civic obligation.

      Summary
      • In the early 80s, largely due to Chomsky's Lectures on Government and Binding and ensuing research, a kind of encompassing theory of empty elements had emerged. This theory was largely concerned with silent subjects, silent pronominals, and various kinds of traces of movement. Since then, however, the picture has become more blurred. More types of empty elements were proposed, ellipsis phenomena began to receive some attention, and interface issues arose: are silent elements silent due to deletion (or failure to be spelled out) at the phonetic interface or are they independently existing items in the lexicon that simply fail to have a phonetic form? Furthermore, silent elements are also ubiquitous in phonology and similar questions arise: can syllables have empty nuclei, can segments fail to be pronounced when they are not properly attached to a slot in a (supra-) segmental structure? Sounds of Silence is an attempt to bring together a number of original contributions that all address such questions. And while a new encompassing theory is not yet in sight, this book helps pave the way. This book offers a study of "empty elements" in language use. The original contributions are from an international list of authors.

Sounds of Silence: Everyday Strategies of Social Repair in Timor-Leste.

      Summary
      • Abstract.Transitional justice discourse and practice is imbued with assumptions about the liberatory power of speech, and constructs silence as a marker of absence, pathology or continuing repression. This article unsettles these assumptions by examining some of the ‘everyday’ ways in which East Timorese people are seeking to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of the Indonesian occupation. Close attention to everyday strategies and practices of social repair brings to the fore the ‘civil’ and ‘pragmatic’ dimensions of silence, while also underscoring the significance of relational and embodied forms of communication in the Timor-Leste context. I conclude that, rather than viewing silence as a ‘problem’, more attention should be paid to its diverse meanings, and to the rich realm of everyday life in which they are embedded.

Marques is to be congratulated on breaking the silence surrounding the abolition of the slave trade of Portugal and bringing a Portuguese voice t6o international debates on abolition." * The International History Review "[Marques] offers an important contribution not only for those interested in the Atlantic slave trade but also enriches generally the transnationally or globally oriented historiography. " * H-Net, Clio-online Portugal was the pioneer of the transatlantic slave trade, the ruler of both Brazil and Angola - the all time champions of that trade -, and one of the last western countries to decree the abolition of slaving institutions. Paradoxically, and in spite of the overwhelming number of works devoted to the problems of slavery produced in recent decades, little was known about the way Portugal dealt with the twilight of the age of slavery and, most of all, with abolitionism. This book offers the first study of the abolition of the Portuguese slave trade, covering the period from the end of the eighteenth century to the mid-1860s, and bringing to life a dark and silenced corner in the history of the odious commerce. Based on a thorough examination of Portuguese and British historical sources - most of them never used before -, and on his awareness of the international scholarship in the field in which he writes, it investigates not only the Portuguese pro and anti-abolitionist attitudes but also the underlying ideologies, and whether and how those attitudes and ideologies changed over time and in the light of events in the political, economic and social spheres.
      • Review: -...this volume is an excellent introduction to the scholarly exchange over the contested subject [of slavery and abolition]... Students of slavery and abolition in the western hemisphere can find no better introduction to the current scholarly debate on these issues...Highly recommended.- - Choice -... a significant contribution to the vast and rich international literature on abolitionism, its causes and consequences, main events and historical processes. Well-informed and up-to-date in relation to the most pressing debates on the abolition of slave trade, ...the study provides a much-needed counterpoint (and counterbalance) to an Anglocentric leaning that overwhelmingly dominates this field of studies.- - e-Journal of Portuguese History -This book is the culmination of decades of careful research, and assumes an important place on a historiographical pitch steamrollered by an over-concentration on British perspectives.- - European History Quarterly -This work elucidates, with clear prose and abundant evidence, a new and important finding: the top slave trading nation of the nineteenth century did not act only upon British will, but developed its own antislavery attitudes within a nationalistic context.- - Enterprise & Society -His is a uniquely authoritative voice on abolition in Portugal, a far remove from the 'enlightened will of the masters' approach...that long dominated the historiography. The book is a spell-binding narrative with scholarship of the highest order. Marques is to be congratulated on breaking the silence surrounding the abolition of the slave trade of Portugal and bringing a Portuguese voice t6o international debates on abolition.- - The International History Review -[Marques] offers an important contribution not only for those interested in the Atlantic slave trade but also enriches generally the transnationally or globally oriented historiography. - - H-Net, Clio-online -...meticulously researched...the translation of this seminal book provides to English-speaking scholars a vivid account of the role of the 'will of the masters' in the process of abolition...- - American Historical Review -...this book will remain a useful source of information to analyse the diplomacy and politics of abolitionism in Portugal.- - Itinerario -The Sounds of Silence is a solid book that we will all welcome on our shelves. The depth of Marques' analysis alone would be enough to make this book one of the most significant contributions to the recent scholarship on the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Nevertheless, Marques' primary sources are tremendously revealing and the variety of topics examined all together make this book a crucial piece of academic work on the field. Joao Pedro Marques has given us an outstanding and refreshing book that has certainly made me look at the slave trade from a different perspective, and from which I have been able to draw new conclusions.- - Reviews in History -(This book) is a landmark not only in the history of Portugal, but also in the history of Angola and Brazil... A work that is light-years ahead of Portuguese writings on the subject, published before 1975- - Analise Social -About the year 1770, the slave trade was at its height, legal everywhere, an integral part of the commerce and society of the Atlantic world. One hundred years later, the slave trade had vanished and chattel slavery itself was destined for extinction. The causes and the dynamics of this radical change are hotly debated. The Sounds of Silence contributes to this debate by investigating the attitudes and political changes that in Portugal led to the ending of the slave trade- - Luso-Brazilian Review -Dr. Marques has written a remarkably lucid, innovative and scholarly book on a subject which has hitherto been partially neglected outside Portugal and comprehensively distorted inside Portugal- - David Birmingham, University of Kent -Dr. Marques' work contributes to the very broad array of studies on nineteenth-century abolition by bringing the distinctive circumstances in Portugal to bear on debates that have otherwise been left to proceed in complete innocence of this important variant of Atlantic history- - Joseph C. Miller, University of Virginia -(The Sounds of Silence) will redress the unbalanced of studies on the Atlantic slave trade and it will be welcomed by the scholarly community. Dr. Marques has written this study with a sound knowledge of the various debates in the slave trade histories of the UK, France and the Netherlands- - Pieter C. Emmer, University of Leiden

      Summary
      • AbstractThe 1960s are usually seen by accounts of modern South African history as a period of quiescence in which resistance to apartheid was crushed. A closer look at the period reveals that the decade was a period in which change in both social structure and political agency laid the foundation for resistance in the 1970s and beyond – a time in which the seeds of apartheid's destruction were sown. The structural change which began this process was the economy's need for more skilled black labour; this gave black people greater bargaining power. The change in agency was the emergence of the Black Consciousness movement with its stress on black collective action. They combined to forge a new form of resistance politics which ultimately defeated apartheid. This history invites not only a re-evaluation of the 1960s but of the respective roles of structure and agency in South Africa's past and present.

      Summary
      • The Sounds of Silent Films comprises up-to-date research on silent film sound, providing a particular focus on historical performance practices combined with detailed theoretical case studies. The contributions by eminent scholars in the fields of musicology, film studies and media studies, as well as by curators and archivists, explore crucial notions such as the historicity of interpretations of silent film music and the diverse acoustic manifestations of film exhibition. The volume stands among the first to integrate a large number of texts that cover a variety of cultural and historical sites and their particular regional and local historical performance practices in, for example, Swedish, Polish, British, Italian, Austrian and Indian silent cinema. The contextualizations of silent film sound production are confronted with their reception in the United States and form a unique comparative perspective for the well documented North American literature.
      • The Sounds of Silent Films is a unique collection of investigatory and theoretical essays that, for the first time, unite up-to-date research on the complex historical performance practices of silent film accompaniment with in-depth analyses of relevant case studies.

      Summary
      • The Sounds of Silent Films is a unique collection of investigatory and theoretical essays that, for the first time, unite up-to-date research on the complex historical performance practices of silent film accompaniment with in-depth analyses of relevant case studies. ; The Sounds of Silent Films comprises up-to-date research on silent film sound, providing a particular focus on historical performance practices combined with detailed theoretical case studies. The contextualizations of silent film sound production are confronted with their reception in the United States and form a unique comparative perspective for the welldocumented North American literature.
