      Summary
      • Built of iron, powered by steam and driven by the screw propeller, Brunel's Great Britain was a radically new type of ship when she first sailed in 1845. Designed to carry passengers in unprecedented comfort, and powerful enough to keep to pre-arranged schedules, she was the prototype of the modern liner. Although, like many of Brunel's projects, she was unsuccessful in her intended role, that of a North Atlantic packet ship, Great Britain enjoyed a long and highly successful career once switched to the Australia run. During more than thirty years the ship carried thousands of passengers, many of them emigrants seeking a new life 'Down Under'. At times of national crisis the ship was also pressed into service as a trooper. For the majority, whether emigrant or soldier, sea travel was a novel and exotic experience, and a surprising number of Great Britain's voyagers recorded their impressions in letters home or journals passed on to their descendants. Every aspect of this curious world was found worthy of comment, from the food - including the livestock shipped to provide fresh meat and milk - to the onboard entertainment, not to mention the dubious and eccentric characters encountered. From this rich variety, Nick Fogg has fashioned a vivid depiction of shipboard life at a crossroad in history when the miseries of passaging under sail were giving way to the modern comforts that travellers now take for granted.

      Summary
      • This book argues that, at a pre-conscious level at least, we control our emotions rather than being at the mercy of them. The authors say that we should seek to understand our emotions and thus be better equipped to cope with situations that provoke strong emotional responses. The book starts by using recent research in psychology, biology, anthropology and sociology to give an account of the nature of emotion and the extent to which individuals are able to control them. It goes on to compare the expression and management of emotion in men and women, and in different cultures and societies. Finally, it adduces evidence to support the theory that people who have a better undestanding of their own emotions are more sympathetic towards others.
      • Review: A deep, wide-ranging, and scholarly exploration of emotion by two psychologists who assert that this area of human nature is much more subject to our control and creative transformation than is commonly believed. Drawing on the writings of poets, artists, philosophers, and other psychologists, and grounding their own somewhat abstract concepts in fascinating examples selected from their therapeutic practices, Averill (Psychology/UMass at Amherst) and Nunley (a Texas clinician) discuss the nature of emotion and the myths surrounding it (e.g., that emotion is biologically determined; that it is the same for both sexes and across all eras and cultures; and that it necessarily holds us in an unshakable grip). The authors present evidence from other cultures and times that show a great variety in such supposedly universal and primary emotions as love and anger, and they go on to explore the nature of creativity and suggest that an "ART" of emotion ("Acquisition, Refinement, and Transformation") is possible. After examining the most common conditions that challenge and facilitate our emotional development (death and dying, pain and pleasure, intimacy, solitude, freedom, autonomy, imagination, the arts), Averill and Nunley recommend five steps to foster an emotionally creative life (making a commitment to remain emotionally flexible; being knowledgeable about the possible range of emotional responses, etc.). Provocative but stronger in theory than in practical application - and further examples of people who replaced uncreative emotional responses with more authentic and effective ones would have enhanced the closing prescriptions. Still, overall, rewarding - if demanding. (Kirkus Reviews)

      Summary
      • 'Tim and I both understood we had done something really stupid. We had underestimated the danger involved in going out to sea. We had no radio, compass, life raft or flares. In other words, we were a couple of idiots'. This is the story of Shane and Timothy Spall and their Dutch barge The Princess Matilda. After a summer on the Thames they head out to sea with only a road atlas and a vast amount of ignorance - and it is absolutely terrifying! On their travels, memories are triggered of childhood trips to the seaside, but also of more recent times. A decade before, Tim had been diagnosed with acute leukaemia and was given only days to live. Shocked at how life can pass you by they decided that when, and if, Tim got better, they would buy a boat. As Tim and Shane explore the coast from the Medway to Cornwall, eventually they start to wonder, could they make it out of England altogether? Could Matilda make it to ...Wales? Taking over five years, "The Voyages of The Princess Matilda" is a minor epic, charting a very personal, moving and uplifting story of an everyday couple's adventure around their much loved homeland.
      • Review: "A beautifully crafted, moving and funny book, stuffed with adventure and massive, palpable love. I want to belong to the Spall family NOW, please" -- Dawn French "Shane and Tim Spall stand shoulder to shoulder in a sea adventure that's funny, delightful, scary - and given their minimal knowledge of seafaring at the outset, occasionally beggars belief. It's a laugh and cry book - I really loved it" -- Jo Brand "[The Spalls at Sea] 'brilliantly watchable seafaring series'" Guardian "Tender, warm and wise: like all the best adventures, Shane Spall's wonderful travel memoir stays in the memory long after the trip itself is over..." -- Michael Simkins "[The Spalls at Sea] 'a little gem'" Independent

      Summary
      • Barbara Novak is one of America's premier art historians, the author of the seminal books American Painting of the Nineteenth Century and Nature and Culture, the latter of which was named one of the Ten Best Books of the Year by The New York Times and was nominated for a National Book Critics Circle Award. Now, with Voyages of the Self, this esteemed critic completes the trilogy begun with the two earlier works, offering once again an exhilarating exploration of American art and culture. In this book, Novak explores several inspired pairings of key writers and painters, drawing insightful parallels between such masters as John Singleton Copley and Jonathan Edwards, Winslow Homer and William James, Frederic Edwin Church and Walt Whitman, and Jackson Pollock and Charles Olson. Through these and other groupings, Novak tracks the varied meanings of the self in America, in which the most salient characteristics of each artist or writer is shown to draw from--and in turn influence--the larger map of American life. Two major threads weaving through the book are the American preoccupation with the "object" and our continuing return to pragmatism. Novak notes for instance how Copley's art mirrors the puritan denial of self found in Jonathan Edwards and how as colonial scientists they share an interest in sensation and observation. She sees Winslow Homer and William James as practitioners of a pragmatic self grounded in an immediate experience that looks for concrete results. Through such fruitful comparisons--whether between Copley and Edwards, or Lane and Emerson, or Ryder and Dickinson--Novak sheds unmatched light on our nation's artistic heritage. Wonderfully illustrated with dozens of black-and-white pictures and sixteen full-color plates, here is a stunning work that yields a wealth of insight into American art and culture--and concludes Novak's landmark trilogy.
      • Through reading paintings and texts from the same period against each other, the author shows how the meaning of self has influenced and changed through American identity and culture from the late 18th to the 20th century.
      • Review: ...the most moving criticism ever written about this primordial painter. Bonnie Barrett Stretch, Art News A breathtaking achievement. Barbara Novak's brilliant inquiry into the transactions of the American self both accepts the mystery of America's many dualities and explains how they coexist and even reinforce each other. Marc Pachter, Director of the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution

      • Review: "No one has done more to further the place of this work in museum collections and in history booksVoyages of the Self , generously illustrated, is billed as the last in a trilogy, though there's no need to read her previous efforts to appreciate it. Novak distills, refines and expands upon her earlier books, looking at painters in relation to the literature and major philosophical trends of the dayHer insights about writers are as fine as those about artists The chapters have a momentum that carries us from chapter to chapter, from the mid-18th century through the mid-20th century. And her way of conveying the stories of these artists and writers makes one want to view and read them anew. What better purpose can arts criticism and history serve?"-San Diego Union Tribune

      Summary
      • The publications of the Hakluyt Society (founded in 1846) made available edited (and sometimes translated) early accounts of exploration. The first series, which ran from 1847 to 1899, consists of 100 books containing published or previously unpublished works by authors from Christopher Columbus to Sir Francis Drake, and covering voyages to the New World, to China and Japan, to Russia and to Africa and India. Nicolò (c. 1326–1402) and Antonio Zeno (died c. 1403) were navigators from Venice. In 1558 a descendant of Nicolò Zeno published a series of letters between the brothers purporting to show voyages of exploration undertaken in the north Atlantic and North America between 1390 and 1400. These letters are controversial and considered to be forgeries, as contemporary records place Nicolò Zeno in Venice during this period. However R. H. Major provides a sympathetic analysis of this material, demonstrating the ingenuity of this fabricated account.

Nicol- (c. 1326-1402) and Antonio Zeno (died c. 1403) were navigators from Venice. In 1558 a descendant of Nicol- Zeno published a series of letters between the brothers purporting to show voyages of exploration undertaken in the north Atlantic and North America between 1390 and 1400. These letters are controversial and considered to be forgeries, as contemporary records place Nicol- Zeno in Venice during this period. However R. H. Major provides a sympathetic analysis of this material, demonstrating the ingenuity of this fabricated account.
