      Summary
      • The County Avifauna series provides detailed information on the range and status of bird species at county level. Areas covered so far include Norfolk, Suffolk, Dorset, the Shetland Islands and the Isles of Scilly, with The Birds of Essex in press. Each title includes a breakdown of rarity records, and there are introductory sections describing the area's ecology, climate, ornithological history and conservation record, as well as a gazeteer of the best sites to visit. Gwent contains a wide range of habitats in a relatively small area, including estuarine wetland in the south, valleys in the west, and uplands in the north, with heavily wooded areas in the Usk and Wye valleys. Major sites include the Newport Wetlands, which attracts visitors from throughout Wales and the west of England to its wet grassland, saline lagoons and freshwater reedbeds. Other important sites include Peterstone Wentlooge.

      Summary
      • The story of a remarkable journey by one of the world's greatest nature writers across five continents to track down every species of the crane family. Once regarded as messengers from heaven, cranes form part of the ancient myth and legend of every country in which they appear. Today, they evoke the retreating wilderness and the vanishing habits upon which they depend. The enormous spans of their migrations are a symbol of their struggle to survive and a stimulus to international conservation efforts. Illustrated with colour plates by the renowned American wildlife artist Robert Bateman, "The Birds of Heaven" captures the beauty of a vanishing species and the dilemma of a planet in ecological crisis.

      • Review: In this book, one of the world's best living nature writers recounts his journeys in search of the crane. In the introductory chapter, Matthiessen makes precise taxonomic distinctions (informing us, for example, that despite similarities of appearance the crane is not a member of the same family as the heron), and tells the reader why he thought it important to travel so far to view the 15 remaining species of crane in their natural habitats. Then he goes on to describe the varying contexts in which the birds live and are perceived. Not only does he visit China and Japan, he finds cranes in Tibet and Mongolia before following them to India, Australia, Africa and America. In each location, Matthiessen talks with the small number of individuals who, like him, work for the preservation of ancient species threatened with extinction. The challenge is thrown out to the reader: 'Are you a citizen of this planet, or merely a consumer?' As we have come to expect from this author, (whose previous works include The Snow Leopard, In The Spirit of Crazy Horse and The Cloud Forest), the writing is vivid and carefully crafted, peopled with interesting characters and situations of passionate immediacy. Yet it is a humbling work. The fragility of the cranes' existence is brought home to us as he reports first from one country, then another, and always the same tale - yes, they are still here, occasionally even flourishing, but no-one can guarantee tomorrow as this project or that eats up more land. The unspoken conclusion of this book, as of all Matthiessen's travelogues, is that unless we begin, without delay, to control the cancer of human population growth, we and the carrion insects will be the only creatures still moving amidst the bones.

      Summary
      • Once regarded as messengers from heaven, presaging longevity and good fortune, cranes appear in the ancient myth and legend of many cultures. Today, they evoke the retreating wilderness, the vanishing horizons of clean water, earth and air upon which their species - and ours too - depends for survival. In "The Birds of Heaven", Peter Matthiessen has woven his accounts of journeys undertaken over more than a decade in search of the fifteen remaining species of crane. From the scarcely populated Amur Valley in Siberia, he travels gradually west and south across Asia, through Australia, Africa and Europe (where the crane population has made a resurgence), ending up in the American Gulf Coast. He is joined by conservationists, scientists and enthusiasts of all nationalities, along with indigenous people - from Mongolian herdsmen to Aboriginals in Australia - whose fates are entwined with the cranes. Illustrated with colour plates by the renowned Canadian wildlife artist Robert Bateman, "The Birds of Heaven" captures the beauty of an endangered species and the dilemma of a planet in ecological crisis.
Summary
      • 'The Birds of Herefordshire' is the first systematic assessment of the breeding and wintering distribution and abundance of the bird species of the county of Herefordshire. It is the culmination of a project, undertaken over a period of ten years, by the Herefordshire Ornithological Club (HOC). The Club, founded in 1950, has carried out many surveys and published annual reports, but never an undertaking as large as a county Bird Atlas. The opportunity provided by the initiation of the British Trust for Ornithology's ambitious Bird Atlas 2007-11, published in 2013, gave the invaluable stimulus and collaborative framework for HOC to embark on the task. Field work, conducted over the five years 2007-12 amassed a volume of data from a total of 545 tetrads (2-km squares) surveyed across the county. Observations by HOC members and numerous other birders contributed nearly a quarter of a million records to combined BTO and HOC datasets. The Atlas presents 215 species accounts and includes 348 distribution and abundance maps with colour plates of many species. Together with supporting chapters, this Atlas provides an unique benchmark of the current status of the birds of Herefordshire, which will not only expand our understanding but form the basis of future monitoring of the county's bird populations. It will also be of value for research, conservation, and indeed, to all interested bodies working to maintain the well-being of Herefordshire birdlife. -- Publisher's description.
