      Summary
      • AbstractUsually, Cu atoms hardly diffuse in Co because of the very low solid solubility limit. However, this letter shows by transmission electron microscopy that extraordinary diffusion of Cu in the Co phase occurred in Co/Cu bicrystal fabricated by diffusion joining and that many dislocations were found in the Co phase. First-principles calculations suggested that the extraordinary diffusion of Cu in Co is related to the movement of dislocations which Cu atoms adhere to.

      Summary
      • Clinicians have long been fascinated by the rare and exotic in med- icine. Similarly, psychiatrists and mental health professionals have been intrigued by the uncommon and extraordinary syndromes which, despite their rarity, have much to teach us about the limitless forms of human adaptation. Of particular interest is the fact that fragments and partial expressions of these rare disorders are often encountered in the dreams and fantasies of the "ordinary" patient. For this reason, the understanding and insights collected in this volume are likely to have clinical usefulness far beyond those rare occasions when we encounter the exotic in its fully developed form. These disorders demonstrate the complex interplay between intra- psychic dynamic forces and the cultural influences which act to shape overt symptomatology. The section on extraordinary syndromes from non-Western cultures demonstrates the universality of the psychody- namic roots of human suffering, despite the seemingly strange furms in which this suffering is expressed. As clinicians we are too often restricted by ethnocentric attitudes and culturally determined stereotypes. This volume provides a stimulating and enjoyable opportunity to reach beyond those limitations.

      Summary
      • Jack Russell Bingo saves his owner's life - constantly: whenever 10-year-old Cole suffers one of the life-threatening episodes in which he stops breathing, Bingo barks to alert Cole's parents. When leading fire investigator Sam, a springer spaniel, smelled accelerant on a discarded shirt it led to the arrest of an arsonist. Zoe, the water rescue team golden retriever, jumps out of helicopters to save drowning swimmers and is strong enough to pull an overturned boat to shore with the stranded fisherman still clinging on. With real-life stories like these, Extraordinary Dogs details how dogs' super-heightened senses, strength and loyalty allow them to perform remarkable acts. It explains the biology behind dogs' physical make-up - their muscular strength, how their movable ears help to pinpoint sound, how their huge number of scent receptors powers their astonishing sense of smell - and dispels many myths, for example that dog's sight is limited: not so - they have amazing ability to see movement over long distances. Each chapter explores an element of the world of dogs - their agility, their hearing, whether their abilities constitute a 'sixth sense' - explaining the science, examining which breeds exhibit particular capabilities and why, and then focussing on individual stories of remarkable dogs. Filled with fascinating and heart-warming descriptions of canine bravery, intelligence and instinct, Extraordinary Dogs examines the complex and intriguing interactions of dogs and their best friends - humans. Extraordinary Dogs accompanies the 13-part Channel 5 prime-time tv series of the same name.

      • For three frogs, an ordinary day on Pebble Island becomes extraordinary when one of them discovers a white egg. Although they've never seen a chicken's egg, they are sure that's what it is. So when a scaly, green, four-legged creature hatches from the egg, the frogs naturally call it a chicken.

      Summary
      • For three frogs, an ordinary day on Pebble Island becomes extraordinary when one of them discovers a white egg. Although they've never seen a chicken's egg, they are sure that's what it is. So when a scaly, green, four-legged creature hatches from the egg, the frogs naturally call it a chicken.

Extraordinary electron and phonon transport through metal-semiconductor hybrid nanocomposite: decoupling electrical and thermal conductivities for thermoelectric application.

      Notes
      • In: International journal of nanotechnology volume 11 issue 9 page 897.
      Summary
      • We report a simple method involving mechanical attrition followed by hot press sintering to fabricate tablet samples consisting of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) dispersed in luminescent silicon nanocrystal (Si NC) matrix. A dramatic increase in current by almost six orders of magnitude is observed for this type of Si NC-Ag NP hybrid nanocomposite compared with bare Si NC-based tablets. Collective charge transport through such hybrid system exhibits unexpected and fascinating characteristics. On the other hand, a remarkable reduction in thermal conductivity by two orders of magnitude is observed in the Si NC-Ag NP nanocomposite compared with the bulk counterpart. This is due to the combined effect of reduction in thermal conductivity of individual NPs and enhanced phonon scattering at the interface. We have, therefore, successfully decoupled electrical and thermal conductivity, which is not possible in any bulk material. The huge increase in electrical conductivity with substantial reduction in thermal conductivity makes this hybrid system amenable for designing efficient thermoelectric with high thermoelectric figure of merit, which has remained a significant challenge..

      • Given the anthropological focus on ethnography as a kind of deep immersion, the interview poses theoretical and methodological challenges for the discipline. This volume explores those challenges and argues that the interview should be seen as a special, productive site of ethnographic encounter, a site of a very particular and important kind of knowing. In a range of social contexts and cultural settings, contributors show how the interview is experienced and imagined as a kind of space within which personal, biographic and social cues and norms can be explored and interrogated. The interview possesses its own authenticity, therefore-true to the persons involved and true to their moment of interaction-whilst at the same time providing information on human capacities and proclivities that is generalizable beyond particular social and cultural contexts.
      • Review: "...a diverse group of scholars who have a broad range of experience as ethnographers and whose work with interviews, life stories and biography highlight the extraordinariness of social encounters." * Tamara Kohn, University of Melbourne "Each chapter is well written and has something interesting . . . to say about interviewing. . . All in all, a genuinely absorbing read which has prompted me to think about interviewing in new ways." * Peter Collins, Durham University

An extraordinary enhancement of wear resistance in a multi-modal-laminated alloy.

      Summary
      • AbstractAn enhanced wear resistance in vacuum has been achieved in a multi-modal-laminated TiZrAlV by using room-temperature rolling combined with subsequent thermal treatment. The sample exhibits a higher wear resistance than the nanostructured counterpart and offers a ~ 30% wear mass reduction as compared with the coarse-grained counterpart. The high wear resistance can be attributed to the combination of high strength and high ductility provided by the multi-modal-laminated structure. This study demonstrates that multi-modal structure can be adopted to enhance the wear resistance of nanostructured metals and alloys for engineering application.Graphical abstractHighlights<list-item>•An enhanced wear resistance was achieved in a multi-modal structured TiZrAlV.</list-item><list-item>•It can be attributed to the combination of high strength and high ductility.</list-item><list-item>•Multi-modal structures can be adopted to enhance wear resistance.</list-item>

      Summary
      • Don't let your innovative business idea sit on the shelf one more day! Extraordinary Entrepreneurship is packed with insights on how to create an exceptional enterprise and examples of ventures that were created to capitalize on market gaps. It also provides more than 600 "Entrepreneurial Dos and Don'ts" from interviews with 200 successful entrepreneurs. Here's what a few entrepreneurs have said about Extraordinary Entrepreneurship: "Customers today are more open to new ideas. It's an incredible time to start a new business or introduce a new product because people are eager to try new things." -Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks "Dr. Harper has ingeniously captured and collected literally hundreds of years of entrepreneurial experience into an easy-to-read experience. Chapters 6 and 7 are the best treatment I've seen on business plans. You will find Chapters 8 through 12 extremely valuable if you ever seek funding of any kind-especially venture capital." -Scot Wingo, cofounder of ChannelAdvisor Corporation "Dr. Harper captures the excitement and anxiety, the courage and commitment, and the concepts and tools that stand at the very heart of entrepreneurship. He opens the door and gives us an insightful, comprehensive look at the entrepreneurial way of life-an attitude, a process, and a journey by which we can turn compelling ideas into profitable realities." -Roger Rains, founder of Global Analytics "Extraordinary Entrepreneurship touches all the essential steps an entrepreneur needs to start and grow his business. Steve tells it straight and to the point. His 'reality checks' contain all the essential ingredients for success." -Michael Cain, entrepreneur and angel investor "Dr. Harper demonstrates that opportunities are everywhere ...as long as you offer a product or service that truly fills a need. Many of the techniques profiled in Chapter 3 have contributed to our success. More important, we will use a number of the new techniques in the future." -Dr. Roy A. Archambault, DPM, founder of Xero Products "Dr. Harper demystifies the process of critically evaluating each business opportunity. He has reminded us that opportunities have not dwindled after the age of irrational exuberance, but instead require both the enthusiasm of a true believer and the pragmatism of a sage. In a profession defined by risk and gamble, he asks the challenging questions that lead to the most confident solutions." -Michael Rhoades, founder of Learning Perspectives, Inc.

      Summary
      • The 21st Century brings all new rules. Entrepreneurs are challenging conventional wisdom and thinking outside the box. One of the first challenges involves challenging the assumption that a business has to be big to be successful. While most of the 20th century heralded big businesses, it is clear that businesses no longer have to be big to do big business. Now it is possible for a handful of people to operate a global business from virtually any place on the planet. Today, the keyboard has overtaken the boardroom. Financial markets, alliances, and joint ventures have eliminated the need for entrepreneurs to put up substantial capital investments. Today's businesses are driven by ideas, innovation, and execution. This book will show entrepreneurs and business leaders will provide CEOs and entrepreneurs with the tools that they will need to become leaders in their market.

      Summary
      • Small and big persons, disabled and elderly, expectant mothers and children. Everyone will fall into one of these categories at least once in their lifetime. In fact, demographics show that at least two of every five people vary from the norm in height, width, and weight at any given time. Yet customarily, designers design for adults of regular size with standard abilities. Written by an expert in human factors and ergonomics, Extraordinary Ergonomics explores designing for population groups that do not meet the customary standards in age, size, and abilities. Underscoring the need for extraordinary ergonomics, the book illustrates various approaches to measuring the characteristics, capabilities, and limitations of those who differ from the norm. It provides the how-tos of designing for people who are smaller, weaker, or bigger, discusses specifically the design for persons with disabilities and the aging population, and covers human factors engineering for expectant mothers and ergonomics for children and teenagers. The author explains how to assess and determine abilities and needs and demonstrates how to design tools, homes, and environments to make working space safe and living space easy.

      Summary
      • AbstractHIV/AIDS continues to be intimately entwined with the moral domain, and thus a positive diagnosis can cast doubt on a person's moral status. I draw on recent literature in the anthropology of ethics and morality, as well as feminist moral philosophy, to analyse the post‐diagnosis practices of HIV‐positive women in Papua New Guinea as they attempt to recuperate their moral personhood and make their ethical commitments visible to others. I argue that they carve out a repertoire of (extra)ordinary ethics from the ‘ordinary’ domain and that their practices tend towards a deontological ethics, rather than a virtue ethics, orientation.

      Summary
      • Abstract: Wallace Stevens was profoundly affected by Nietzsche?s declaration of the death of God and his poetry reflects an ongoing struggle to understand what it means to be a poet in an age of disbelief. Although Steven?s early poetry suggests that this loss of belief created a sense of crisis in the poet, his later work indicates a full acceptance, even an embracing, of this loss, recognising it as the inspiration for poesis. The thesis considers Stevens alongside of such thinkers as Nietzsche and (the later) Heidegger and shows how the poet came to regard the shaking of the metaphysical foundations as a gift offering the possibility for poetry.
