      Summary
      • This volume aims to present recent achievements in rare-Earth elements geology and mineralogy studies in China. The authors systematically describe all rare-Earth minerals and rare-Earth ore deposits discovered in China and their geological features. The rare-Earth minerals include huanghoite and baotite from China, as well as rare-Earth minerals from other parts of the world, and new species and varieties discovered in China. For each mineral, a systematic description of classification is given, such as chemical composition, crystallography and crystal structure, physical properties and X-ray powder data. The book should be of interest to geoscientists who are interested in both the theoretical and practical study of mineralogy.

      Summary
      • AbstractAn engineering geological study was undertaken to determine the engineering properties, and mineralogy of ultrasoft soils (USS) obtained from a nearshore mine tailings sedimentation pond. The USS is a high plasticity clay of high water content and low shear strength. Marine bathymetric and seismic reflection surveys were undertaken in the sedimentation pond located in the foreshore of the Eastern part of the Republic of Singapore. Specimens collected from the bore holes were tested to determine the engineering and mineralogy properties of the USS. Field vane shear tests were undertaken just adjacent to the sampling bore holes to determine the shear strength properties of the USS. The mineralogical properties of the USS were determined using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope techniques. The USS is under consolidated soil where higher density and lower water content were found at deeper depth. The USS had three different compression indices under three log cycles of effective stress between 1–10, 10–100, and 100–1,000 kPa. This is the main characteristic of USS, which diverts from reconstituted soil. The outcome of this research is fundamental for understanding the compression behavior and subsequently the development of a constitutive model for USS, typical found in sedimentary pond.

These sludges are either dumped on the landfills or reused as secondary resources in order to preserve natural resources. A large portions of these sludges are mineral sludges, originating from metal recycling plants. In order to estimate their metal recovery potential, these mineral sludges were characterized. Four types of mineral sludge samples were collected from a metal recycling plant (3 from the recycling plant storage areas (bulk storage, barrel storage and storage shed) and 1 from the collection basin). The sludges were characterized, wherein the Mo, Ni, Cr, Co, Zn and W content and speciation were quantified. The samples had pH values between 5.9 and 10.3 with organic matter contents varying between 6.3% (storage shed) and 29.5% (bulk storage) (loss on ignition at 500 °C). Based on their leaching properties, the four mineral sludge samples (in the case of Mo) and the bulk storage sludge (in the case of Ni and Zn) were classified as potentially hazardous regarding the EN 12457-1 and EN 12457-2 method. Mineralogical results reveal that both bulk storage and the storage shed give the highest contributions to the metal content of the collection basin sample. Sequential extraction of the collection basin samples indicated that Mo is bound to the oxidizable and residual fraction, while Ni, Cr and Co were bound to the residual fraction, and Zn to the soluble acid fraction, respectively. W tends to be equally distributed among all extracted fractions. A strong correlation existed between Mo and Co, as well as between Ni, Zn and Cr, respectively.

      Summary
      • AbstractDespite technological improvements in its production process, the sanitary ware industry inevitably generates a certain volume of discards, products whose quality is not up to standard. The present paper is the first to scientifically explore clay‐based sanitary ware waste (SW) with a view to its valorization as an addition in the design of new, more environmentally friendly cements. The focus is on characterization of the waste and its pozzolanicity, as well as the structural and microstructural changes taking place in the pozzolan/Ca(OH)2system in the first 90 d of reaction. The findings show that pozzolanicity in clay‐based waste is comparable to the activity observed in silica fume (SF) and higher than that found in other clay‐based materials and fly ash (FA). The microstructural study of the clay‐based waste/Ca(OH)2system, in turn, reveals that the proportion of C–S–H gels rises with hydration time. These gels are characterized by long mean chain lengths (MCL) and low Ca/Si ratios. The intrinsic characteristics of this thermally activated clay‐based waste qualify it as a type Q pozzolans as defined in the European cement standards, making it apt for use in the manufacture of CEM II, IV, and V cements.

Mineralogy and morphology of geologic units at Libya Montes, Mars: Ancient aqueously derived outcrops, mafic flows, fluvial features, and impacts.

      Summary
      • Abstract[1] There is ample evidence of both ancient and long‐lasting fluvial activity and chemical alteration in the Libya Montes region south of Isidis Basin. The region hosts Noachian to Amazonian aged surface rocks with extensive outcrops of olivine‐ and pyroxene‐bearing material. Libya Montes also features surface outcrops and/or deposits hosting Fe/Mg‐smectite, Fe/Mg‐smectite mixed with carbonate and/or other Fe/Mg‐rich phyllosilicates, and Al‐smectite. These units likely formed through chemical alteration connected with hydrothermal activity resulting from the formation of the Isidis Basin and/or the pervasive fluvial activity throughout this region. The morphology and stratigraphy of the aqueous and mafic minerals are described using High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment and High Resolution Stereo Camera derived digital terrain models. Analyses of the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars spectra show variations in the chemistry of the Fe/Mg‐smectite from nontronite‐like exposures with spectral features near 2.29 and 2.4 µm more consistent with Fe3+2OH groups in the mineral structure, and saponite‐like outcrops with spectral features near 2.31 and 2.38 µm characteristic of Mg2+3OH groups. These Fe/Mg‐smectite bearing materials also have bands near 1.9 µm due to H2O and near 2.5 µm that could be due to the smectite, other phyllosilicates, and carbonates. All regions exhibiting carbonate features near 3.4–3.5 µm also have features consistent with the presence of olivine and Fe/Mg‐smectite, indicating that the carbonate signatures occur in rocks likely containing a mixture of these minerals. The Al‐smectite‐bearing rocks have bands near 1.41, 1.91, and 2.19 µm that are more consistent with beidellite than other Al‐phyllosilicates, indicating a higher‐temperature or diagenetically processed origin for this material. Our interpretation of the geologic history of this region is that ancient Noachian basaltic crustal materials experienced extensive aqueous alteration at the time of the Isidis impact, during which the montes were also formed, followed by emplacement of a rough olivine‐rich lava or melt, and finally the smooth pyroxene‐bearing caprock unit.Key Points<list-item>The Libya Montes region includes Noachian to Amazonian aged surface rocks</list-item><list-item>Surface rocks contain pyroxene, olivine, Fe/Mg‐clays, dolomite, and beidellite</list-item><list-item>Aqueous alteration and montes formation were likely induced by the Isidis impact</list-item>

Mineralogy and ore fluid chemistry of the Roc Blanc Ag deposit, Jebilet Hercynian massif, Morocco.

      Summary
      • AbstractThe Roc Blanc Ag deposit is located about 20 km north of Marrakesh city (Morocco) in the Jebilet Hercynian massif. The ore bodies consist of N-S to NE-SW quartz (±carbonates) veins hosted by the Sarhlef marine sediments. These series, deposited in a Devonian-Carboniferous rift basin context, were deformed during the Hercynian orogeny, and submitted to low-grade regional metamorphism. Two major stages of fluid circulation and metal deposition are distinguished on the basis of mineralogical and paleo-fluid studies carried out on quartz and dolomite (microthermometry, Raman spectroscopy, LA-ICP-MS on individual inclusions, and O, H stable isotope data): (i) an early Fe-As stage, characterized by the circulation of metamorphic aqueous-carbonic fluids, under P-T conditions lower than 200 MPa ± 20 MPa and 400 °C respectively, along N-S structures; (ii) the ore stage, characterized by the circulation of a Na-Mg-K ± Ca high salinity brine, poor in gas but rich in metals such as Fe, Sr, Ba, Zn, Pb, ± Cu (salinity ranging from 19.6 wt% to likely more than 30 wt% NaCl equiv.) and the deposition of a sphalerite/dolomite-calcite assemblage; such a fluid likely evolved to a Na-K-(Ca-Mg)-Ag brine, with significant Pb and Sb concentrations and lower Sr, Ba and Zn concentrations than in the preceding fluid (salinity up to 19.4 wt% NaCl equiv.). The Ag content of the second mineralizing brine ranges from 0.9 mmol/kg to 9.4 mmol/kg solution (100 ppm–1000 ppm), whereas the base metal brine is generally Ag poor (up to 1.3 mmol/kg solution: 140 ppm). Dilution of the Ag brine by low salinity fluids (<6 wt% NaCl equiv., and Th from 130° to 230 °C) seems to be the main driving mechanism for the Ag ore deposition at Roc Blanc, with a possible involvement of cooling and reduction reactions in black schists. Base metal and Ag fluids may have circulated at average temperatures around 200 ± 30 °C or slightly higher and under hydrostatic pressures, along dominant E-W structures. The ore forming model proposed for the Roc Blanc deposit is: (i) the penetration of sedimentary brines coming from the adjacent basins into the basement (i.e. Hercynian formations), where they extracted Ag probably from abundant mafic rocks; ii) the ore deposition in structural traps below the post Hercynian unconformity thanks to brine mixing with low salinity fluids. The fluid circulation probably is related to the Atlasic rifting coeval with the Atlantic Triassic opening. Such a model contrasts with the previous one relating the Roc Blanc to the Hercynian granitic intrusions in the Jebilet. Ag deposition occurred during reworking of the early structures associated with the Hercynian orogenic events and metamorphic fluid circulation which led to the early Fe-As uneconomic stages forming the main N-S quartz veins. Similarities between The Roc Blanc Ag deposit and the major Ag deposits from Anti-Atlas south of Morocco strongly suggest that they resulted from a unique and large fluid circulation event and a major period of metal deposition.Highlights<list-item>•This study represents a complete characterization of the mineralogy and ore fluid features at the Roc Blanc Ag deposit, Morocco.</list-item><list-item>•The Ag concentrations in the mineralizing fluids were determined by a specific calibration of LA-ICP-MS.</list-item><list-item>•A metallogenic model was proposed for the Roc Blanc Ag deposit.</list-item>

      Summary
      • AbstractLunar meteorite Northwest Africa (NWA) 5744 is a granulitic breccia with an anorthositic troctolite composition that may represent a distinct crustal lithology not previously described. This meteorite is the namesake and first‐discovered stone of its pairing group. Bulk rock major element abundances show the greatest affinity to Mg‐suite rocks, yet trace element abundances are more consistent with those of ferroan anorthosites. The relatively low abundances of incompatible trace elements (including K, P, Th, U, and rare earth elements) in NWA 5744 could indicate derivation from a highlands crustal lithology or mixture of lithologies that are distinct from the Procellarum KREEP terrane on the lunar nearside. Impact‐related thermal and shock metamorphism of NWA 5744 was intense enough to recrystallize mafic minerals in the matrix, but not intense enough to chemically equilibrate the constituent minerals. Thus, we infer that NWA 5744 was likely metamorphosed near the lunar surface, either as a lithic component within an impact melt sheet or from impact‐induced shock.

      Summary
      • AbstractI-type cosmic spherules are micrometeorites that formed by melting during atmospheric entry and consist mainly of iron oxides and FeNi metal. I-types are important because they can readily be recovered from sedimentary rocks allowing study of solar system events over geological time. We report the results of a study of the mineralogy and petrology of 88 I-type cosmic spherules recovered from Antarctica in order to evaluate how they formed and evolved during atmospheric entry, to constrain the nature of their precursors and to establish rigorous criteria by which they may be conclusively identified within sediments and sedimentary rocks. Two textural types of I-type cosmic spherule are recognised: (1) metal bead-bearing (MET) spherules dominated by Ni-poor (<1.5 wt%) wüstite and FeNi metal (10–95 wt% Ni) with minor magnetite, and (2) metal bead-free (OX) spherules dominated by Ni-rich wüstite (0.5–22.5 wt%) and magnetite. Two varieties of OX spherule are distinguished, magnetite-poor dendritic spherules and magnetite-rich coarse spherules. Six OXMET particles having features of both MET and OX spherules were also observed. The wüstite to magnetite ratios and metal contents of the studied particles testify to their formation by melting of extraterrestrial FeNi grains during progressive oxidation in the atmosphere. Precursors are suggested to be mainly kamacite and rare taenite grains. Vesicle formation within metal beads and extrusion of metallic liquid into surrounding wüstite grain boundaries suggests an evaporated iron sulphide or carbide component within at least 23% of particles. The Ni/Co ratios of metal vary from 14 to >100 and suggest that metal from H-group ordinary, CM, CR and iron meteorites may form the majority of particles. Oxidation during entry heating increases in the series MET < magnetite-poor OX < magnetite-rich OX spherules owing to differences in particle size, entry angle and velocity. Magnetite-poor OX spherules are shown to form by crystallisation of non-stoichiometric wüstite at the liquidus followed by sub-solidus decomposition to magnetite, whilst in magnetite-rich OX spherules magnetite crystallises directly at the liquidus. Magnetite rims found on most particles are suggested to form by oxidation during sub-solidus flight. The separation of metal beads due to deceleration is proposed to have been minor with most OX spherules shown to have been in equilibrium with metal beads containing >80 wt% Ni comprising a particle mass fraction of <0.2. Non-equilibrium effects in the exchange of Ni between wüstite and metal, and magnetite and wüstite are suggested as proxies for the rate of oxidation and cooling rate respectively. Variations in magnetite and wüstite crystal sizes are also suggested to relate to cooling rate allowing relative entry angle of particles to be evaluated. The formation of secondary metal in the form of sub-micron Ni-rich or Pt-group nuggets and as symplectite with magnetite was also identified and suggested to occur largely due to the exsolution of metallic alloys during decomposition of non-stoichiometric wüstite. Weathering is restricted to replacement of metal by iron hydroxides. The following criteria are recommended for the conclusive identification of I-type spherules within sediments and sedimentary rocks: (i) spherical particle morphologies, (ii) dendritic crystal morphologies, (iii) the presence of wüstite and magnetite, (iv) Ni-bearing wüstite and magnetite, and (v) the presence of relict FeNi metal.

      Summary
      • AbstractThis paper aims to study the mineralogical composition and determine the petroleum potential of source rocks of the Oligocene-Miocene sequence in the Nile Delta and North Sinai districts. The studied interval in the five wells can be divided into five rock units arranged from the top to base; Qawasim, Sidi Salem, Kareem, Rudeis, and Qantara formations. The bulk rock mineralogy of the samples was investigated using X-Ray Diffraction technique (XRD). The results showed that the sediments of the Nile Delta area are characterized by the abundance of quartz and kaolinite with subordinate amounts of feldspars, calcite, gypsum, dolomite, and muscovite. On the other hand, the data of the bulk rock analysis at the North Sinai wells showed that kaolinite, quartz, feldspar and calcite are the main constituents associated with minor amounts of dolomite, gypsum, mica, zeolite, and ankerite.Based on the organic geochemical investigations (TOC and Rock-Eval pyrolysis analyses), all studied formations in both areas are thermally immature but in the Nile delta area, Qawasim, Sidi Salem and Qantara formations (El-Temsah-2 Well) are organically-rich and have a good petroleum potential (kerogen Type II–oil-prone), while Rudeis Formation is a poor petroleum potential source rock (kerogen Type III–gas-prone). In the North Sinai area, Qantara Formation has a poor petroleum potential (kerogen Type III–gas-prone) and Sidi Salem Formation (Bardawil-1 Well) is a good petroleum potential source rock (kerogen Type II–oil-prone).Highlights<list-item>•Mineralogy and source rocks evaluation of the Oligo-Miocene sequence in five wells.</list-item><list-item>•Sediments of Nile Delta area rich in quartz and kaolinite with minor feldspars.</list-item><list-item>•Kaolinite, quartz, feldspar and calcite are main constituents in North Sinai area.</list-item><list-item>•The studied formations are thermally immature but have a good petroleum potential.</list-item>

      Summary
      • AbstractThe Curiosity rover has detected diverse lithologies in float rocks and sedimentary units on the Gale crater floor, interpreted to have been transported from the rim. To understand their provenance, we examine the mineralogy and geology of Gale's rim, walls, and floor, using high‐resolution imagery and infrared spectra. While no significant differences in bedrock spectral properties were observed within most Thermal Emission Imaging System and Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) scenes, some CRISM scenes of rim and wall rocks showed olivine‐bearing bedrock accompanied by Fe/Mg phyllosilicates. Hydrated materials with 2.48 μm absorptions in Gale's eastern walls are spectrally similar to the sulfate unit in Mount Sharp (Aeolis Mons). Sedimentary strata on the Gale floor southwest of the landing site, likely coeval with the Bradbury units explored by Curiosity, also are hydrated and/or have Fe/Mg phyllosilicates. Spectral properties of these phyllosilicates differ from the Al‐substituted nontronite detected by CRISM in Mount Sharp, suggesting formation by fluids of different composition. Geologic mapping of the crater floor shows that the hydrated or hydroxylated materials are typically overlain by spectrally undistinctive, erosionally resistant, cliff‐forming units. Additionally, a 4 km impact crater exposes >250 m of the Gale floor, including finely layered units. No basement rocks are exposed, thus indicating sedimentary deposits ≥250 m beneath strata studied by Curiosity. Collectively, the data indicate substantial sedimentary infill of Gale crater, including some materials derived from the crater rim. Lowermost thin layers are consistent with deposition in a lacustrine environment; interbedded hydrated/hydroxylated units may signify changing environmental conditions, perhaps in a drying or episodically dry lake bed.Plain Language SummaryThe Curiosity rover has detected diverse rocks on the floor of Gale crater; these are interpreted to have been transported there from the crater rim. To better constrain where these rocks came from, we examine the mineralogy and geology of Gale's rim, walls, and floor, using high‐resolution images and spectra. While the majority of Gale is dusty and did not reveal any convincing mineral signatures, we did observe some portions of the rim and wall showing iron‐rich minerals and probable iron or magnesium bearing clays. Rocks on the Gale floor also have hydration signatures similar to those of clays. These clays and those from the rim and wall are different from those in Mount Sharp because they do not have aluminum; this suggests that the waters they formed in or the rocks they came from were different. Geologic mapping of the crater floor shows that the clay‐like materials are typically overlain by bland‐appearing, erosionally resistant, cliff‐forming units. Additionally, a 4 km impact crater exposes >250 m of material below the Gale floor, including rocks that appear finely layered. None of the original crater rocks are exposed, only rocks that later filled Gale. This indicates later deposits ≥50 m beneath those traversed by the Curiosity rover. Collectively, the data indicate substantial infill of Gale crater, including materials derived from the crater rim. The lowermost thin layers are consistent with deposition in a lake; alternating levels of hydration in the mapped rock units may imply changing environmental conditions, perhaps in a drying or episodically dry lake bed.Key Points<list-item>Olivine and Fe/Mg phyllosilicates are common in Gale rim/wall rocks; feldspar‐rich units were searched for but not detected</list-item><list-item>Multiple units with hydrated and hydroxylated materials are found in floor materials southwest of MSL's landing site</list-item><list-item>A >90 m succession of finely layered sediments on the NW Gale crater floor may record changes between lacustrine and aeolian environments</list-item>

      • Highlights<list-item>•Three generations of Co- or Cu-bearing sulfides have distinct textures and compositions.</list-item><list-item>•At least three stages of Co–Cu metallogenesis were identified.</list-item><list-item>•Early stage of syn-tectonic metamorphism led to initial enrichment of Co and Cu.</list-item><list-item>•First stage of hydrothermal mineralization significantly upgraded Co–Cu ores.</list-item><list-item>•Shilu Co–Cu ores were of BIF origin but largely reworked and refined.</list-item>AbstractHosted within the metamorphosed, neritic siliciclastic rocks and sedimentary carbonates of the Proterozoic Shilu Group, the Shilu Fe–Co–Cu ore district in Hainan Province of South China comprises the upper Fe- and the lower Co–Cu ore layers. Combined with the field observation, the mineralogical and geochemical studies of sulfides using electron microprobe and laser ablation ICP-MS analyses recognized three types of Co–Cu ores. Type I is represented by massive ores and mainly comprises the first generation of pyrite (PyI) which occurred either as recrystallized, subhedral to euhedral microcrystal aggregates (PyIa) or as elongated, fine-grained euhedral grains (PyIb) with an orientated alignment parallel to S1foliation. Type II is banded, disseminated and brecciated ores, and composed of the second generation of pyrite (PyII) which displays internal rhythmic growth zoning, the first generations of chalcopyrite (CcpI) and pyrrhotite (PoI), and associated Co–(Ni)–(As)–sulfide minerals. Type III occurring as veins or veinlets mainly consists of the third generation of pyrite (PyIII) and the second generations of chalcopyrite (CcpII) and pyrrhotite (PoII), of which PyIIIappears as subhedral to euhedrall grains or as rims of composite pyrite. The moderate Co and As, and high Ni contents as well as the low Co/Ni ratios (∼2–5) in PyIindicate a sedimentary–metamorphic origin for Type I ores. The higher Co, Ni and As concentrations in PyIbrelative to PyIalikely was related to an inhomogeneous deformation–metamorphism. The highest Co (av. 51,195 ppm) in PyIIand Ni (av. 3374 ppm) in PoImost likely were linked to the preferred incorporation of Co into pyrite and Ni into pyrrhotite. Combined with the high Ag concentrations in CcpI(av. 266 ppm) and PyII(av. 13.32 ppm), the high Co/Ni ratios in PyII(av. 1241) suggest the derivation of Type II ores from a Co–Cu–Ni–Ag-rich hydrothermal fluid. Further, up to 9 wt.% Co concentrations in PyIIshow a temperature condition of 310–400 °C. In contrast, the depletion of trace elements in CcpIIand PyIII, and the lower Co/Ni ratios (av. 46) in PyIIIsuggest a Co-poor but Cu-bearing hydrothermal fluid for origin of Type III ores. The complex texture and chemical composition of sulfides combined with previous work confirm a four-stage metallogenesis for the Shilu Co–Cu ores. From early to late, these include: (1) the ca. 1075–880 Ma deposition of the primary Co–Cu ore source beds which most likely were derived from submarine, metalliferous hydrothermal fluids, (2) the syn-structural metamorphism which led to Type I ores due to the South China Caledonian Orogeny, (3) the first stage of hydrothermalism which produced Type II ores and most likely was associated with Indosinian magmatism, and (4) the second stage of hydrothermalism which yielded Type III ores and likely was related to Yanshanian magmatism. The first stage of hydrothermalism was considered to be significant for the Co–Cu enrichment. The Shilu Co–Cu ores thus are better attributed to a BIF origin, but greatly reworked and enriched by late structural deformation and hydrothermal activities.

      Summary
      • AbstractAbstractEgyptian beach ilmenite occurs in a relatively high content in the naturally highly concentrated superficial black sand deposits at specific beach zones in the northern parts of the Nile Delta at Rosetta. Microscopic study shows that the ilmenite occurs as fresh homogeneous black or heterogeneous multicoloured altered grains and exhibits three types (homogeneous, exsolved and altered) of ilmenite varieties. XRD data of ilmenite indicates their association with minor hematite and quartz, whereas leucoxene shows its association with Nb‐rutile, pseudorutile and hematite. Grain size distribution suggests a very fine sand size of >89% and 80% and a fine sand size of 10.5% and 18.3% for fresh and altered ilmenites, respectively. The density of fresh, altered ilmenite and leucoxene concentrates varies from 2.70, 2.50 to 2.40 ton/m3, suggesting a gradual decrease from high grade fresh to leucoxene and consistent with variation in magnetic susceptibility as a consequence of the leaching of iron. Mass magnetic susceptibility reveals 97.6% of ilmenite and 92% of the altered form are obtained at 0.20 and 0.48 ampere. Fresh ilmenite exhibits variable TiO2(47.18%) and Fe2O3T(46.10%) with minor MnO, MgO and Cr2O3(1.22, 1.10 and 0.51%). The altered ilmenite is higher in TiO2(76.16%) and SiO2(4.68%) and lower in Fe2O3T(14.45%), MnO, MgO and Cr2O3(0.39, 0.52 and 0.11%) compared with the fresh form. Three concentrates of ilmenites (G1, G2 and G3) were prepared from crude ore using a Reading cross belt magnetic separator under different conditions, revealing a gradual increase of TiO2, SiO2, Al2O3and CaO accompanied by a decrease of Fe2O3T, MgO and Cr2O3with repetition of the separation processes. Several ore dressing techniques were carried out to upgrade the ilmenite concentrate.
