All that is known is a Hebrew translation made by Moses Ben Samuel Tibbon around 1255, and it is this translation that Moses Finzius used as the basis for the present Latin translation.

      Notes
      • The "Sixtine edition" of the Vulgate. The Council of Trent had ordered the printing of an accurate edition, but this project "was not ... continuously pursued till the pontificate of Sixtus V. (1585-1590), who ... summoned ... the commission of cardinals and scholars under the presidency of Cardinal Antonio Carafa, and entrusted them with the task, while he himself worked ... at examining the readings ... The result of their labours was this 'Sixtine edition' ... printed by Aldus Manutius the younger ... at the Vatican, the Pope himself revising the proofs. In its text it comes nearer to R. Stephanus' Bible of 1538-40 than to the Louvain editions [first published in 1547]; it differs from both in the complete absence of marginal variants" (D. & M.)
      • Principal contents: p. [5]-[6], decree of the Council of Trent on canonical books; p. [7]-[17], Papal Bull ordering the use of this edition; p. [1]-'1141', text.
      • "Text in double columns, with verse-numbers at the side ... No chapter-headings or marginal matter ... The system [of verse-numbers] is a peculiar one, and does not agree with that introduced by R. Stephanus" (D. & M.)
      • "Many errors in the text are emended -- some by pen ... others by means of printed slips pasted over the incorrect words ... M. Hetzenauer states that alterations were made while the work was passing through the press, and that all copies do not agree." (D. & M.)

The result of their labours was this 'Sixtine edition' ... printed by Aldus Manutius the younger ... at the Vatican, the Pope himself revising the proofs. In its text it comes nearer to R. Stephanus' Bible of 1538-40 than to the Louvain editions [first published in 1547]; it differs from both in the complete absence of marginal variants"; cf. Darlowe & Moule.
