      Summary
      • Histories of modern science often begin with the heroic battle between Galileo and the Catholic Church, which sparked the Scientific Revolution and led to the world-changing discoveries of Isaac Newton. In reality, more than a millennium before the Renaissance, a succession of scholars paved the way for the discoveries for which Galileo and Newton are credited. In Before Galileo, John Freely investigates the first European scientists, many of them monks, whose influence ranged far beyond the walls of their monasteries. He shows how science and religion existed together, and places the great discoveries of the age in their rightful context.
      • Review: 'A sinuous odyssey, which chronicles the transmission of scientific ideas from ancient Greece and Rome to an early modern Europe on the cusp of the scientific revolution' Booklist 'Informative and intriguing - Freely shows how Western science developed in relation to - and in controversy with - ancient Greek ideas about matter, light, motion and the structure of the heavens' Publishers Weekly

      Summary
      • R.C. Davis provided the classic account of the European medieval world; equipping generations of undergraduate and 'A' level students with sufficient grasp of the period to debate diverse historical perspectives and reputations. His book has been important grounding for both modernists required to take a course in medieval history, and those who seek to specialise in the medieval period. In updating this classic work to a third edition, the additional author now enables students to see history in action; the diverse viewpoints and important research that has been undertaken since Davis' second edition, and progressed historical understanding. Each of Davis original chapters now concludes with a 'new directions and developments' section by Professor RI Moore, Emeritus of Newcastle University. A key work updated in a method that both enhances subject understanding and sets important research in its wider context. A vital resource, now up-to-date for generations of historians to come.

Lust for liberty : the politics of social revolt in medieval Europe, 1200-1425 / Samuel K. Cohn, Jr.

      Summary
      • "Lust for Liberty" challenges long-standing views of popular medieval revolts. Comparing rebellions in northern and southern Europe over two centuries, Samuel Cohn analyses their causes and forms, their leadership, the role of women, and the suppression or success of these revolts. Popular revolts were remarkably common - not the last resort of desperate people. Leaders were largely workers, artisans, and peasants. Over 90 percent of the uprisings pitted ordinary people against the state and were fought over political rights - regarding citizenship, governmental offices, the barriers of ancient hierarchies - rather than rents, food prices, or working conditions. After the Black Death, the connection of the word 'liberty' with revolts increased fivefold, and its meaning became more closely tied with notions of equality instead of privilege. The book offers a new interpretation of the Black Death and the increase of and change in popular revolt from the mid-1350s to the early 15th Century. Instead of structural explanations based on economic, demographic and political models, this book turns to the actors themselves - peasants, artisans, and bourgeois - finding that the plagues wrought a new urgency for social and political change and a new self- and class-confidence in the efficacy of collective action.
      • Review: In "Lust for Liberty" Samuel Cohn sets out to examine revolts in medieval Europe between 1200 and 1425...This book goes far beyond any individual revolt, however, by problematizing the nature and processes of revolt all across Europe in this period, and thus forcing us to re-consider the broader context of each one. It is a stimulating and insightful book, with an argument as relevant to the teacher of the medieval survey as to the specialist.--Margaret McGlynn "Left History "
