      Summary
      • The current era is marked by an unparalleled level of human migration, the consequence of both recent and long-term political, economic, cultural, social, demographic and technological developments. Despite increased efforts to limit its size and consequences, migration has wide-ranging impacts upon social, environmental, economic, political, and cultural life in countries of origin and settlement. Such transformations impact not only those who are migrating, but those who are left behind, as well as those who live in the areas where migrants settle. The Handbook of Migration Studies offers a conceptual approach to the study of international migration, exploring clearly the many modes of exit, reception and incorporation which involve varied populations in disparate political, economic, social and cultural contexts. How do these movements also facilitate the transmission of ideologies and identities, political and cultural practices and economic resources? Uniquely among texts in the subject area, the Handbook also provides a section devoted to exploring methods for studying international migration. Featuring forty-seven essays written by leading international and multidisciplinary scholars, the Routledge International Handbook of Migration Studies offers a contemporary, integrated and comprehensive resource for students and scholars of sociology, politics, human geography, law, history, urban planning, journalism, and health care.
      • Review: A gem of a book, packed with thoughtful and well-written essays, that brings together an interdisciplinary group of scholars to survey a broad range of topics, theoretical approaches, and methods in the field of international migration. Full of fascinating information and valuable insights, Gold and Nawyn have produced an indispensable resource for students and scholars alike. -Nancy Foner, Distinguished Professor of Sociology, Hunter College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York International migration is a highly complex issue, but this handbook offers the reader a clear and comprehensive introduction into thinking about this and doing scientific research. The handbook draws together important and diverse writings, mainly but not exclusively by American authors, and provides an essential resource for students of international migration. -Jan Rath, University of Amsterdam Patterns of migration change over time. So do patterns of studying them. This impressive and wide-ranging survey of the most up-to-date approaches in the field of migration studies has entries on everything from sexuality to elite migration, to the view from sending states to international adoptions and climate-induced migration. The Handbook also examines concepts and methods, from assimilation to transnationalism to comparative approaches. It has something for everyone: smart syntheses of your own specialty and smart useful overviews of those you know less about. This book is a must for every migration scholar's shelf. -Nancy L. Green, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales In an age of migration, this International Handbook of Migration Studies is a magnificent achievement. The editors have brought together four dozen original essays by leading scholars that illuminate this vast and fascinating field, as rapidly changing as the world on the move it seeks to grasp. Global in scope, innovative in design, with wide-angle multidisciplinary lenses, this timely volume is an essential reference for scholars, students, and informed publics alike. -Ruben G. Rumbaut, co-author of Immigrant America: A Portrait, and Legacies: The Story of the Immigrant Second Generation The Routledge International Handbook of Migration Studies constitutes a current and comprehensive presentation of the challenges of one of the most significant phenomenon of the contemporary world. The reader is introduced in different dimensions of migration and from this perspective the handbook is an excellent tool for scholars with backgrounds in various fields (sociology, economics, anthropology, political science, journalism, psychology and others). The numerous first hand authors, as well as the serious theoretical and empirical evidences presented generate premises for a deeper understanding of the international migration. - Alin Croitoru, Social Change Review Steven Gold and Stephanie Nawyn have assembled an impressive collection of essays from leading and rising scholars of international migration... The handbook in its entirety would be an especially useful resource for graduate students preparing their field exams and developing research questions and designs, non-specialists seeking an overview of migration studies, and migration specialists who would like to look up from their national dishes to sample from a broader smorgasbord. - David Scott Fitzgerald, University of California, San Diego, Contemporary Sociology

      Summary
      • Corruption in Asia ranges from the venal rent-seeking of local officials to the million-dollar bribes received by corrupt politicians; from excessive position-related consumption to future job offers in the private sector for compliant public servants; from money-laundering to 'white elephant' projects that do little more than line the pockets of developers and their political partners. The Routledge Handbook of Corruption in Asia addresses the theories, issues and trends in corruption and anticorruption reform that have emerged from this diverse experience. The book is divided into four major parts: corruption and the state; corruption and economic development; corruption and society; and controlling corruption: strategies, successes and failures. Chapters will compare and contrast corruption in different social and institutional contexts, examine both successful and unsuccessful attempts to control it, and consider what lessons can be drawn from these Asian experiences. This academically rigorous and insightful book will be of interest to a wide range of students and scholars, particularly those of Asian studies, politics and sociology.

      • The Routledge Handbook of Japanese Culture and Society is an interdisciplinary resource that focuses on contemporary Japan and the social and cultural trends that are important at the beginning of the twenty-first century. This Handbook provides a cutting-edge and comprehensive survey of significant phenomena, institutions, and directions in Japan today, on issues ranging from gender and family, the environment, race and ethnicity, and urban life, to popular culture and electronic media. Written by an international team of Japan experts, the chapters included in the volume form an accessible and fascinating insight into Japanese culture and society. As such, the Handbook will be an invaluable reference tool for anyone interested in all things Japanese. Students, teachers and professionals alike will benefit from the broad ranging discussions, useful links to online resources and suggested reading lists. The Handbook will be of interest across a wide range of disciplines including Japanese Studies, Cultural Studies, Anthropology, Sociology and Asian Studies in general.
      • Review: 'This is a tremendous book and should jump the queue of all those books on contemporary Japan you have been intending to read. The editors deserve kudos for putting together a stellar group of specialists and our gratitude for making them abandon the usually scholarly trappings. The chapters are written in an accessible and thoughtful style and focus on explaining various aspects of culture and society for nonspecialists. This academic-lite approach is a welcome relief from the usual trudge through a specialists' tome, jettisoning the disciplinary discourse without sacrificing the insights. Lucidly written, this is an ideal book for undergraduate classes as it includes a glossary, bibliography and comprehensive list of relevant websites. Experts will also find this a rewarding collection.' - Jeff Kingston, Director of Asian Studies at Temple University, Japan 'Few books offer such a broad and kaleidoscopic view of the complex and contested society that is contemporary Japan. Students and professionals alike may use this as a stand-alone reference text, or as an invitation to explore the increasingly diverse range of Japan-related titles offered by Routledge.' - Joy Hendry, Professor of Social Anthropology and Director of the Europe Japan Research Centre at Oxford Brookes University, UK 'This is the first reference work you should pick up if you want an introduction to contemporary Japanese society and culture. Eminent specialists skillfully pinpoint key developments and explain the complex issues that have faced Japan and the Japanese since the end of World War II.' Elise K. Tipton, Honorary Associate Professor of Japanese Studies in the School of Languages and Cultures at the University of Sydney, Australia 'An invaluable interdisciplinary compendium of contemporary Japan. This Handbook contains a series of insightful essays dealing with such diverse areas as aging and social welfare, popular music, religion, sport, law, politics and education. The collection is also informed by theoretically sophisticated analysis of subjects that will be of major interest to all scholars of Japanese society.' - Dixon Wong Heung Wah, School of Modern Languages and Cultures, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong "It is good to have such a uniformly excellent collection of short essays that reflects, by and large, today's mainstream scholarly opinion in Western Japanology on a wide range of social and cultural issues-and, by doing so, also challenges the often simplistic and stereotypical model of a monolithic "Japan, Inc." that was popular just a few decades ago." -- Roy Starrs, University of Otago, in Asia Pacific World (Spring 2012) "An impressive array of scholars contributed to the 22 chapters, which present a plurality of viewpoints from many disciplines. Indeed the strength of this handbook is its breadth of analysis... for students and scholars interested in Japan, this well-researched and insightful handbook constitutes essential reading." - Elise Foxworth, La Trobe University; Asian Studies Review; March 2013 - volume 37, issue 1.

      Summary
      • Since the 1990s there has been a dramatic increase in cultural flows and connections between the countries in the East Asian region. Nowhere is this more apparent than when looking at popular culture where uneven but multilateral exchanges of Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese, Hong Kong and Chinese products have led to the construction of an 'East Asian Popular Culture'. This is both influenced by, and in turn influences, the national cultures, and generates transnational co-production and reinvention. As East Asian popular culture becomes a global force, it is increasingly important for us to understand the characteristics of contemporary East Asian popular culture, and in particular its transnational nature. In this handbook, the contributors theorize East Asian experiences and reconsider Western theories on cultural globalization to provide a cutting-edge overview of this global phenomenon. The Routledge Handbook of East Asian Popular Culture will be of great interest to students and scholars of a wide range of disciplines, including: Cultural Studies, Media Studies, Communication Studies, Anthropology, Sociology and Asian Studies in general.

      Summary
      • This text addresses emerging issues and conceptualizations in global health, expanding upon the critical priorities in this rapidly evolving field. It provides an authoritative overview for students, practitioners, researchers, and policy makers concerned with public health around the globe.
      • At the beginning of the twenty-first century, key public health issues and challenges have taken centre stage. They range from arsenic in drinking water to asthma among children and adults; from the re-emergence of cholera, to increasing cancer rates and other chronic diseases; from AIDS to malaria and hepatitis; from the crises faced by displaced or refugee populations to the new challenges that have emerged for reproductive health and rights. Like most aspects of contemporary life, these problems have been impacted by globalization. The issues that confront us are being shaped by evolving processes such as the growth of inequalities between the rich and the poor in countries around the world, the globalization of trade and commerce, new patterns of travel and migration, as well as a reduction in resources for the development and sustainability of public health infrastructures. The Routledge Handbook of Global Public Health explores this context and addresses both the emerging issues and conceptualizations of the notion of global health, along with expanding upon and highlighting the critical priorities in this rapidly evolving field. It is organized in ten main sections. The topics covered include: * The transition from international to global health * Structural inequalities and global public health * Ecological transformation and environmental health in the global system * Population and reproductive health * Conflict, violence and emergencies in global public health * Global public health policy and practice * Global public health and development * Global mental health * Global access to essential medicines * Health systems, health capacity, and the politics of global public health This comprehensive handbook will provide an authoritative overview for students, practitioners, researchers, and policy makers working in or concerned with public health around the globe.
      • Review: 'A truly multidisciplinary approach to public health and global health makes this book special.' - Peter Piot, Professor of Global Health and Director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK, and former Executive Director of UNAIDS, and Under Secretary-General of the United Nations "This comprehensive, well-written, and well-edited book is an important contribution to understanding the many complex issues that all nations face. A much-needed addition to the field, and must reading for anyone who is seriously interested in global public health." - R. M. Mullner, University of Illinois at Chicago

      Summary
      • At the beginning of the twenty-first century, key public health issues and challenges have taken centre stage on the global scene. Ranging from arsenic in drinking water to asthma among children and adults; from the re-emergence of cholera and diphtheria, to increasing rates of various forms of cancer; from HIV and AIDS to MDR-TB, malaria, and hepatitis; from the crises faced by displaced or refugee populations to the new challenges that have emerged for reproductive health and rights; from the experience of public health emergencies as the result of disasters such as tsunamis, earthquakes, and catastrophic storms to the growing spectre of potential global pandemics such as those linked to H5N1. The expansion of serious public health problems, increasingly taking shape on a global scale, has been one of the defining features of recent history. [Source : introduction]

      Summary
      • This edited collection brings together many of the world's leading experts, both academic and practitioner, in a single volume handbook that examines key international issues in the field of hate crime. Collectively it examines a range of pertinent areas with the ultimate aim of providing a detailed picture of the hate crime 'problem' in different parts of the world. The book is divided into four parts: * An examination, covering theories and concepts, of issues relating to definitions of hate crime, the individual and community impacts of hate crime, the controversies of hate crime legislation, and theoretical approaches to understanding offending. * An exploration of the international geography of hate, in which each chapter examines a range of hate crime issues in different parts of the world, including the UK, wider Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. * Reflections on a number of different perspectives across a range of key issues in hate crime, examining areas including particular issues affecting different victim groups, the increasingly important influence of the Internet, and hate crimes in sport. * A discussion of a range of international efforts being utilised to combat hate and hate crime. Offering a strong international focus and comprehensive coverage of a wide range of hate crime issues, this book is an important contribution to hate crime studies and will be essential reading for academics, students and practitioners interested in this field.
      • Review: 'Hate crimes are a global problem and a serious human rights challenge that require a comprehensive response from governments and other stakeholders wherever they occur. This Handbook is an important new tool in the formulation of policies to combat hate crime, offering the latest thinking from top experts on the nature, incidence and impact of hate crime, as well as an honest account of the progress made and challenges that remain in law enforcement, criminal justice, and other policy responses to these crimes and the intolerance in which they are rooted.' - Paul LeGendre, Human Rights First, USA 'You do not have to agree with all the conclusions of the experts who contributed to this important book to recognize that it is an invaluable tool for officials who help set policy vis-a-vis hate crimes, as well as the frontline officers who have to deal with the impact of hate on diverse communities.' - Rabbi Abraham Cooper, Associate Dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, USA

      Summary
      • The Routledge International Handbook of Globalization Studies offers students clear and informed chapters on the history of globalization and key theories that have considered the causes and consequences of the globalization process. There are substantive sections looking at demographic, economic, technological, social and cultural changes in globalization. The handbook examines many negative aspects - new wars, slavery, illegal migration, pollution and inequality - but concludes with an examination of responses to these problems through human rights organizations, international labour law and the growth of cosmopolitanism. There is a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches with essays covering sociology, demography, economics, politics, anthropology and history. The Handbook, written in a clear and direct style, will appeal to a wide audience. The extensive references and sources will direct students to areas of further study.
      • Review: 'Bryan Turner is one of today's most creative social scientists and it is a treat for the reader that he now has turned his attention also to globalization. The topics that are discussed in this work are all extremely well chosen and cover everything from economics, internet and politics to the climate, Human Rights and the spread of infectious diseases. The Handbook of Globalization Studies is a must for everybody who wants to better understand the contemporary world as well as for every library that wants to serve and educate its visitors.' - Richard Swedberg, Cornell University, USA 'This volume provides a valuable overview of contemporary discussions of globalization and what exactly the term means. Bryan Turner's introduction surveys the relevant debates with breadth and sobriety, calling into question some of the reigning shibboleths about this much-discussed but little-understood buzzword of our times. The volume will be useful to the specialist and the student alike.' - John Torpey, City University of New York Graduate Center, USA 'The Handbook of Globalization Studies makes a significant contribution to the widely discussed theme of globalization. Bryan Turner has skilfully brought together a variety of scholars from a broad range of social science disciplines, and the reader will be impressed by the rich and insightful arguments that emerge from this diverse range of perspectives.' - Mohamed Cherkaoui, CNRS and University of Paris Sorbonne 'It is a timely, well puttogether compendium with an index incorporating key words and authors.' - Linda Low, Abu Dhabi Government and University of United Arab Emirates

      Summary
      • The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is one of the most prominent issues in world politics today. Few other issues have dominated the world's headlines and have attracted such attention from policy makers, the academic community, political analysts, and the world's media. The Routledge Handbook on the Israeli- Palestinian Conflict offers a comprehensive and accessible overview of the most contentious and protracted political issue in the Middle East. Bringing together a range of top experts from Israel, Palestine, Europe and North America the Handbook tackles a range of topics including: * The historical background to the conflict * peace efforts * domestic politics * critical issues such as displacement, Jerusalem and settler movements * the role of outside players such as the Arab states, the US and the EU This Handbook provides the reader with an understanding of the complexity of the issues that need to be addressed in order to resolve the conflict, and a detailed examination of the varied interests of the actors involved. In-depth analysis of the conflict is supplemented by a chronology of the conflict, key documents and a range of maps. The contributors are all leading authorities in their field and have published extensively on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict/peace process. Many have played a leading role in various Track II initiatives accompanying the peace process.
      • Review: 'For a quick and authoritative grounding on Israeli demography, or Israeli theater, or the refugee issue, or Hamas, or any of sixty other aspects of Israel or the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, [this is] the reference work of choice. There is nothing else quite like it... a valuable reference work that should be in the library of all academics in the field, or, in fact, anyone with more than a passing interest in Israel or the Israeli-Palestinian conflict... Perfect for that "quick fix," especially for particular issues that will not go away any time soon.' - Alan Dowty, University of Notre Dame; The Israel Journal of Foreign Affairs 2013.

      Summary
      • Environmental Anthropology studies historic and present human-environment interactions. This volume illustrates the ways in which today's environmental anthropologists are constructing new paradigms for understanding the multiplicity of players, pressures, and ecologies in every environment, and the value of cultural knowledge of landscapes. This Handbook provides a comprehensive survey of contemporary topics in environmental anthropology and thorough discussions on the current state and prospective future of the field in seven key sections. As the contributions to this Handbook demonstrate, the subfield of environmental anthropology is responding to cultural adaptations and responses to environmental changes in multiple and complex ways. As a discipline concerned primarily with human-environment interaction, environmental anthropologists recognize that we are now working within a pressure cooker of rapid environmental damage that is forcing behavioural and often cultural changes around the world. As we see in the breadth of topics presented in this volume, these environmental challenges have inspired renewed foci on traditional topics such as food procurement, ethnobiology, and spiritual ecology; and a broad new range of subjects, such as resilience, nonhuman rights, architectural anthropology, industrialism, and education. This volume enables scholars and students quick access to both established and trending environmental anthropological explorations into theory, methodology and practice.

      Summary
      • Information and communication technology occupies a central place in the modern world, with society becoming increasingly dependent on it every day. It is therefore unsurprising that it has become a growing subject area in contemporary philosophy, which relies heavily on informational concepts. The Routledge Handbook of Philosophy of Information is an outstanding reference source to the key topics and debates in this exciting subject and is the first collection of its kind. Comprising over thirty chapters by a team of international contributors the Handbook is divided into four parts: * basic ideas * quantitative and formal aspects * natural and physical aspects * human and semantic aspects. Within these sections central issues are examined, including probability, the logic of information, informational metaphysics, the philosophy of data and evidence, and the epistemic value of information. The Routledge Handbook of Philosophy of Information is essential reading for students and researchers in philosophy, computer science and communication studies.

      Summary
      • Routledge Handbook of Social and Sustainable Finance brings together an international cast of leading authorities to map out and display the disparate voices, traditions and professional communities engaged in social finance activity. With a clear societal or environmental mission, foundations, individual and group investors, as well as public bodies around the world have become increasingly eager to finance and support innovative forms of doing business. Together, founders and established businesses alike are embracing new sustainable business models with a distinct stakeholder approach to tackle social or environmental problems in what they see as a failed economic system in crisis. As a result, the topic of social and sustainable finance is at the forefront of financial economic thought. This Handbook is divided up into three parts. The first, "The Landscape of Social and Sustainable Finance and Investments", comprises of chapters from a multitude of perspectives in an effort to grasp the entirety of the landscape. The second, "Challenges, Suggestions, Critiques and Debates", focuses on areas ranging from sociological underpinnings to critical takes on markets, and the identification of specialized business models. Amongst ethical considerations, topics include the scaling of impact, an analysis of sustainability as risk prevention and comparative analyses of various methods of justification and measurement. In the third and final section, "Markets and Institutions", contributions range from various perspectives on sustainable banking to environmental marketplaces, and finally on to practical cases and country specific observations. This volume is essential reading for both academics and students in economics and finance. It is also of interest to those who study environmental economics, microeconomics and banking.

Index `The recent decade saw a dramatic rise in the popularity of terms `socially responsible' or `sustainable' and their use in many areas including finance. The terms have been widely utilized by businesses, politicians and researchers alike. The dramatic diversity in the contexts where these terms were applied blurred the understanding of what exactly meant by `sustainable' finance. This book is a welcome attempt to put various aspects of sustainability and social responsibility together. It provides an impressively comprehensive taxonomy of thoughts, methods, approaches and ideas in the field. It is an excellent reference not just for researchers in the area but anyone who is open to alternative ideas to traditional finance theories and approaches.' - Dr Alexandr Akimov, Senior Lecturer in Banking and Finance, Griffith Business School, Griffith University, Australia Othmar M. Lehner is a leading researcher in the field of social finance and impact investment. With a professional background as a bank manager, he now dedicates his academic career to the advancement of the field through research publications, advisory services, conferences, and lecturing in MBA and doctoral programmes.

      Summary
      • The Routledge Handbook of Media Use and Well-Being serves as the first international review of the current state of this fast-developing area of research. The volume provides a multifaceted perspective on the beneficial as well as the detrimental effects of media exposure on psychological health and well-being. As a "first-mover," it will define the field of media use and well-being and provide an essential resource for research and teaching in this area. The volume is structured along four central considerations: Processes presents concepts that provide a theoretical bridge between media use and well-being, such as psychological need satisfaction, recovery from stress and strain, self-presentation and self-enhancement, or parasocial interactions with media characters, providing a comprehensive understanding of the underlying processes that drive psychological health and well-being through media. Moderators examines both risk factors that promote negative effects on well-being and protective factors that foster positive media effects. Contexts bridges the gap between theory and "real life" by illustrating how media use can influence well-being and satisfaction in very different life domains, covering the full spectrum of everyday life by addressing the public, private, and work spheres. Audiences takes a look at the influence of life phases and life situations on the interplay of media use and well-being, questioning whether various user groups differ with regard to the effects of media exposure. Bringing together the expertise of outstanding international scholars from multiple disciplines, including communication, media psychology, social psychology, clinical psychology, and media education, this handbook sheds new light on the role of media in influencing and affecting emotions.

      Summary
      • This volume reviews the state of the field of world-systems analysis. World-systems analysts study the structure of the relationships among people, organisations, and states and how those relationships change over time.
      • World-systems analysis has developed rapidly over the past thirty years. Today's students and junior scholars come to world-systems analysis as a well-established approach spanning all of the social sciences. The best world-systems scholarship, however, is spread across multiple methodologies and more than half a dozen academic disciplines. Aiming to crystallize forty years of progress and lay the groundwork for the continued development of the field, the Handbook of World-Systems Analysis is a comprehensive review of the state of the field of world-systems analysis since its origins almost forty years ago. The Handbook includes contributions from a global, interdisciplinary group of more than eighty world-systems scholars. The authors include founders of the field, mid-career scholars, and newly emerging voices. Each one presents a snapshot of an area of world-systems analysis as it exists today and presents a vision for the future. The clear style and broad scope of the Handbook will make it essential reading for students and scholars of anthropology, archaeology, geography, political science, history, sociology, and development economics.

      • Review: As all good handbooks, this one is a mine of information, including a host of references for following up the reading of any one of its chapters. More than that, many of its chapters, but especially its introduction and conclusion, contextualise their topics in theoretical debates in the sociological, anthropological and historical comparison of religions, wisely avoiding any attempts at authoritative definitions. But the best thing about it is the focus, beyond doctrines and philosophies, on religious practices be they internet puja, mother-goddess spirit possession, or the sacralisation of place. Stephan Feuchtwang London School of Economics, UK Religions in Asia presents a truly global combination of overviews and focused studies that traverses an Asian diasporic world stretching from London to Mongolia and deals with topics as diverse as amulets and the internet. This theoretically-informed collection will be welcomed by all those seeking authoritative but student-friendly essays that illuminate the multiple ways in which global interactions continue to influence Asia's religious beliefs and praxis. Barbara Watson Andaya University of Hawai'i The Routledge Handbook of Religions in Asia boldly challenges, critiques, and expands social scientific theories of religion as it illuminates religious practices and global connections. This handbook's vast scope makes it a necessary reference for anyone interested in contemporary religion, globalization, and social change in Asia. Rachel Rinaldo University of Virginia, USA This brilliant collection is a must-read for anyone interested in the religions of Asia. One of the rare books that offers a truly cosmopolitan dialogue across disciplines and cultures, it pushes the boundaries of contemporary thought on religion. A symphonic account of religions in Asia as they go through profound transformations in our global age, this volume prepares us for a better understanding of the future of religions. Summary
      • The academic fields of religion and values have become the focus of renewed interest in contemporary thinking about human activity and its motivations. The Routledge International Handbook of Education, Religion and Values explores and expands upon a range of international research related to this revival. The book provides an authoritative overview of global issues in religion and values, surveying the state of the academic area in contributions covering a wide range of topics. It includes emerging, controversial, and cutting-edge contributions, as well as investigations into more established areas. International authorities Arthur and Lovat have brought together experts from across the world to examine the complexity of the field of study. The handbook is organised around four key topics, which focus on both the importance of religion and values as broad fields of human enquiry, as well as in their application to education, inter-agency work and cross-cultural endeavours: -The Conceptual World of Religion and Values -Religion and Values in Education -Religion and Values in Inter-agency Work -Religion and Values in Cross-cultural Work. This comprehensive reference work combines theoretical and empirical research of international significance, and will be valuable reading for students, researchers and academics in the field of education.

      Summary
      • Subject: This book presents the key issues in constitutional law thematically allowing for a truly comparative approach to the subject. It also pays particular attention to constitutional design, identifying and evaluating various solutions to the challenges involved in constitutional architecture.
      • The Routledge Handbook of Constitutional Law is an advanced level reference work which surveys the current state of constitutional law. Featuring new, specially commissioned papers by a range of leading scholars from around the world, it offers a comprehensive overview of the field as well as identifying promising avenues for future research. The book presents the key issues in constitutional law thematically allowing for a truly comparative approach to the subject. It also pays particular attention to constitutional design, identifying and evaluating various solutions to the challenges involved in constitutional architecture. The book is split into four parts for ease of reference: * Part One: General issues "sets issues of constitutional law firmly in context including topics such as the making of constitutions, the impact of religion and culture on constitutions, and the relationship between international law and domestic constitutions. * Part Two: Structures presents different approaches in regard to institutions or state organization and structural concepts such as emergency powers and electoral systems * Part Three: Rights covers the key rights often enshrined in constitutions * Part Four: New Challenges - explores issues of importance such as migration and refugees, sovereignty under pressure from globalization, Supranational Organizations and their role in creating post-conflict constitutions, and new technological challenges. Providing up-to-date and authoritative articles covering all the key aspects of constitutional law, this reference work is essential reading for advanced students, scholars and practitioners in the field.
      • Review: 'This volume enables readers to glimpse constitutional theory and practice around the globe. In brief essays (organized around the themes of constitutionalism, government structures, and various forms of rights), the authors address both longstanding and new problems addressed by constitutional orders. Moreover, rather than country-by-country comparisons, this Handbook focuses on the ideas and values that animate constitutional design; examples work in service of a subject matter, rather than as end unto themselves. As a consequence, this Handbook invites readers to reflect on the aspirations that constitutions embody and the challenges that they face.' Summary
      • The Routledge Handbook of Discourse Analysis covers the major approaches to Discourse Analysis from Critical Discourse Analysis to Multimodal Discourse Analysis and their applications in key educational and institutional settings. The handbook is divided into six sections: Approaches to Discourse Analysis, Register and Genre, Developments in Spoken Discourse, Educational Applications, Institutional Applications and Identity, Culture and Discourse. The chapters are written by a wide range of contributors from around the world, each a leading researcher in their respective field. All chapters have been closely edited by James Paul Gee and Michael Handford. With a focus on the application of Discourse Analysis to real-life problems, the contributors introduce the reader to a topic, and analyse authentic data. The Routledge Handbook of Discourse Analysis is vital reading for linguistics students as well as students of communication and cultural studies, social psychology and anthropology.
      • Review: 'This discourse analysis handbook wins hands down as the most intellectually responsible in the field - both in terms of the comprehensiveness of the topics considered and the international spectrum of specialists involved.' James Martin, University of Sydney, Australia 'The Handbook of Discourse Analysis is accessible to undergraduates and yet a state-of-the-art introduction for graduate students and practicing researchers in a wide range of fields. There are many introductions to or handbooks of Discourse Analysis available today. This is the most comprehensive, up-to-date, and internationally representative of them all.' Summary
      • Citizenship studies is at a crucial moment of globalizing as a field. What used to be mainly a European, North American, and Australian field has now expanded to major contributions featuring scholarship from Latin America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. The Routledge Handbook of Global Citizenship Studies takes into account this globalizing moment. At the same time, it considers how the global perspective exposes the strains and discords in the concept of 'citizenship' as it is understood today. With over fifty contributions from international, interdisciplinary experts, the Handbook features state-of-the-art analyses of the practices and enactments of citizenship across broad continental regions (Africas, Americas, Asias and Europes) as well as deterritorialized forms of citizenship (Diasporicity and Indigeneity). Through these analyses, the Handbook provides a deeper understanding of citizenship in both empirical and theoretical terms. This volume sets a new agenda for scholarly investigations of citizenship. Its wide-ranging contributions and clear, accessible style make it essential reading for students and scholars working on citizenship issues across the humanities and social sciences.

      Summary
      • This is the first handbook to cover the sociological approaches to higher education. It is timely because of global expansions of mass higher educational systems, especially as these systems come under scrutiny by a variety of stakeholders. Questions are being raised about the value of traditional pedagogies along with calls for efficiency, accountability and cost-reduction, but above all job training. Within this neoliberal context, each chapter examines different sociological aspects of, and debates about, educational institutions as status-conferring organizations, with myriad positional characteristics, experiences, and outcomes. Many current debates concern the legitimacy of the statuses conferred, including the continuing debate regarding the role of universities in legitimating social class reproduction as well as more recent concerns about standards in mass systems. This handbook puts these issues and debates in focus in ways that will be of interest to a variety of stakeholders, within academia as well as in policy circles.
      • Review: This volume offers a foundational contribution to the field-one that is both comprehensive in its global reach and impressive in the array of analytical perspectives thoughtfully presented in each chapter. It will stand as a valuable resource for many years to come. Patricia J. Gumport, Professor of Education, Director of the Stanford Institute for Higher Education Research, and Vice Provost for Graduate Education, Stanford University

      • Islam has long been a part of the West in terms of religion, culture, politics and society. Discussing this interaction from al-Andalus to the present, this Handbook explores the influence Islam has had, and continues to exert; particularly its impact on host societies, culture and politics. Highlighting specific themes and topics in history and culture, chapters cover: * European paradigms * Muslims in the Americas * Cultural interactions * Islamic cultural contributions to the Western world * Western contributions to Islam Providing a sound historical background, from which a nuanced overview of Islam and Western society can be built, the Routledge Handbook of Islam in the West brings to the fore specific themes and topics that have generated both reciprocal influence, and conflict. Presenting readers with a range of perspectives from scholars based in Europe, the US, and the Middle East, this Handbook challenges perceptions on both western and Muslim sides and will be an invaluable resource for policymakers and academics with an interest in the History of Islam, Religion and the contemporary relationship between Islam and the West.
      • Review: "Chapters ... cover almost all aspects of crisis and the concerns of Muslims living as minorities in the West. Here, readers can acquaint themselves with issues of minority identity, Islamophobia, tensions with multiculturalism, issues surrounding the scholarship on gender and feminism, economics, and banking. There is even attention given to youth and popular culture. This text is comprehensive. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All levels/libraries." - A.B. McCloud, DePaul University, in CHOICE, May 2015 They cover almost all aspects of crisis and the concerns of Muslims living as minorities in the West and here, readers can acquaint themselves with issues of minority identity, Islamophobia, tensions with multiculturalism, issues surrounding the scholarship on gender and feminism, economics, and banking. - A.
