      Summary
      • This history of science fiction film traces the genre from its earliest days to the two pre-war blockbusters, "Metropolis" and "Things to Come", whose commercial failure put an end to big-budget science fiction film-making for 30 years. It goes on to examine the space adventures of the 1950s, such as "Forbidden Planet" and "This Island Earth", the more horror-based examples such as "Invasion of the Body-Snatchers", the hugely successful "2001" and the post-"Star Wars" boom from the late 1970s onwards. The author is a science fiction critic and author whose novels include the "Skylords" series.

      Summary
      • This study confronts current influential theories that science fiction is either an American phenomenon or an international one. The study rejects the idea that British science fiction is distinguishable only by its pessimistic outlook--while also rejecting the idea that other designations, such as scientific romance or speculative fiction, better fit the British product. Instead, the study traces the evolution of British science fiction, showing how H. G. Wells synthesized various strains in English literature, and how later writers, conscious of this Wellsian tradition, built upon Wells's literary achievement. An introduction defines what might reasonably be placed under the heading British science fiction, and why. Chapter 1 examines previous critical ideas about the nature of British science fiction, revealing that most of them are based on untested assumptions. Chapter 2 explores the significance of the dominant motif of the island in British SF --a motif that suggests that British SF and mainstream English literature have been long and fruitfully intertwined. Chapters 3 and 4 deal respectively with British disaster fiction before and after the Second World War. They focus on why British science fiction has so frequently seemed obsessed with catastrophe. Chapter 5, a polemical conclusion, deals with the future of British science fiction based on its current predicament. Ultimate Island forms a theoretical counterpart to the author's recently-published British Science Fiction: A Chronology 1478-1990 (Greenwood 1992), which defines the historical scope of the field.

      Summary
      • With diverse contributions from scholars in English literature, psychology, and film and television studies, this collection of essays contextualizes Fringe as a postmodern investigation into what makes us human, and as an examination of how technology invariably transforms our humanity. The essays provide a provocative meditation on how a stellar example of science fiction television comments on the state of personal identity in a 21st century society dependent on technology that both enlivens and threatens the individual. In compiling this collection, the editors sought material as multifaceted as the series itself, devoting sections to specific areas of interest explored by both the writers of Fringe and the writers of the essays: humanity, duality, genre, and viewership. Taken together, the section headings serve as a map to the many thematic readings the editors and contributors apply to Fringe.

      Summary
      • With our lives firmly controlled by the steady pace of time, humans have yearned for ways to escape its constraints, and authors have responded with narratives about traveling far into the past or future, reversing the flow of time, or creating alternate universes where Napoleon was triumphant at Waterloo or the South won the Civil War. Writers ranging from Dante and Lewis Carroll to Philip K. Dick and Martin Amis have probed into the workings of time, and an overwhelming desire to master time reverberates throughout popular culture. This book considers how imaginative works involving time and time travel reflect ongoing scientific concerns and examine the human condition. The scope of the volume is unusually wide, covering such topics as Dante, the major novels of the 19th century, and stories and films of the 1990s. The book concludes with a lengthy bibliography of short stories and novels, films and television programs, and nonfiction works that feature time travel or speculations about time. With a roster of contributors that includes several of the field's major scholars, this book offers many new insights into this fascinating subject.

      Summary
      • "Worlds collide in this true story of weather control in the Cold War era and the making of Kurt Vonnegut"--
      • In the late 1940s, Kurt Vonnegut is home after surviving the firebombing of Dresden. He has ambitions to be a novelist but dares to share them only with his new wife. Kurt struggles to complete college and write while working nights at a newspaper. Soon there's a child on the way. Anxious about supporting his family, Kurt quits school and takes a job in the PR department of General Electric, where his older brother, Bernard, is a leading scientist in what's called the "House of Magic"--GE's Research Lab. Unlike Kurt's, with its stops and starts, Bernard's life had always gone according to plan. With a Ph.D. from MIT, Bernie worked for the military during World War II and afterward joined "the nation's oldest and most renowned industrial research lab." By the time Kurt arrives at GE, Bernie is piling up patents on a series of cutting-edge weather-control technologies meant to make deserts bloom. While Kurt writes press releases by day and labors over short stories by night, Bernard builds silver iodide generators and sends planes to bomb cloud banks with dry ice. These experiments, dubbed Project Cirrus, soon attract the attention of military men--maybe weather will even become "the new super-weapon." But as evidence mounts that Project Cirrus is causing alarming changes in the atmosphere, Bernard begins to have misgivings about the harmful uses of his inventions, and Kurt starts writing a new kind of story depicting scientists grappling with moral questions and with fantastic inventions gone awry. Set against a backdrop of atomic anxiety and the dawn of the digital age, The Brothers Vonnegut is a wild collision of science and literature. Melding biography and cultural history, Ginger Strand uses letters, manuscripts, lab notebooks, and interviews to chronicle how the brothers navigated a world where the possibilities of science seemed infinite--a fascinating story of two ambitious men wrestling with the ethical dilemmas of their age, revealing how the desire to control the natural world shaped one of our most inventive novelists.--Adapted from book jacket.

      Summary
      • "Worlds collide in this true story of weather control in the Cold War era and the making of Kurt Vonnegut In the mid-1950s, Kurt Vonnegut takes a job in the PR department at General Electric in Schenectady, where his older brother, Bernard, is a leading scientist in its research lab--or "House of Magic." Kurt has ambitions as a novelist, and Bernard is working on a series of cutting-edge weather-control experiments meant to make deserts bloom and farmers flourish. While Kurt writes zippy press releases, Bernard builds silver-iodide generators and attacks clouds with dry ice. His experiments attract the attention of the government; weather proved a decisive factor in World War II, and if the military can control the clouds, fog, and snow, they can fly more bombing missions. Maybe weather will even be--as a headline in American Magazine calls it--"The New Super Weapon." But when the army takes charge of his cloudseeding project (dubbed Project Cirrus), Bernard begins to have misgivings about the use of his inventions for harm, not to mention the evidence that they are causing alarming changes in the atmosphere. In a fascinating cultural history, Ginger Strand chronicles the intersection of these brothers' lives at a time when the possibilities of science seemed infinite. As the Cold War looms, Bernard's struggle for integrity plays out in Kurt's evolving writing style. The Brothers Vonnegut reveals how science's ability to influence the natural world also influenced one of our most inventive novelists"--

      Summary
      • Through the lens of science fiction, this book investigates representations of time in postmodernism. Are we living in a post-temporal age? Has history come to an end? This book argues against the widespread perception of postmodern narrativity as atemporal and a historical, claiming that postmodernity is characterized by an explosion of heterogeneous narrative 'timeshapes' or chronotopes. Chronological linearity is being challenged by quantum physics that implies temporal simultaneity; by evolutionary theory that charts multiple time-lines; and by religious and political millenarianism that espouses an apocalyptic finitude of both time and space. While science, religion, and politics have generated new narrative forms of apprehending temporality, literary incarnations can be found in the worlds of science fiction. By engaging classic science-fictional conventions, such as time travel, alternative history, and the end of the world, and by situating these conventions in their cultural context, this book offers a new and fresh perspective on the narratology and cultural significance of time.
      • Review: "In this probing study we see how our sci-fi dreams remain haunted by inexorable Time and discover why postmodernist reports of the death of Time are mistaken."--Sanford Lakoff

      Summary
      • For over 40 years science fiction has provided television with both memorable and forgettable moments. "Doctor Who", "Star Trek", "The Prisoner" and Gerry Anderson's supermarionation puppets have attracted a devoted following who refuse to let their legends fade. Other series, such as "Space Patrol" and "Andromeda", have not been so fortunate, slipping into the twilight zone of archive television.;This A-Z guide to four decades of both good and bad science fiction on television has been revised and brought up to date to include recent successes such as "Quantum Leap", "Babylon 5", and the new "Star Trek" offspring, "Next Generation" and "Deep Space Nine".
