      Summary
      • Can multilateral treaties succeed in transforming conduct when they are rejected by the most powerful states in the international system? In the past two decades, coalitions of middle-power states and transnational civil society groups have negotiated binding legal agreements in the face of concerted opposition from China, Russia, andmost especiallythe United States. These instances of a so-called 'new diplomacy' reflect a deliberate attempt to use the language of international law to bypass great power objections in establishing new global standards. Yet critics have frequently derided such treaties as utopian and counter productive because they fail to include those states allegedly most capable of effectively managing complex international cooperation. Thus far no study has offered a systematic, comparative study of the promise, and limits, of multilateralism without the great powers. Norms Without the Great Powers addresses this gap through the presentation of a novel theoretical account and detailed empirical evidence regarding the implementation of two archetypal cases, the antipersonnel Mine Ban Treaty and International Criminal Court. Both treaties have substantially reshaped expectations and behaviour in their respective domains, but with important variation in the extent and breadth of their impact. These findings provide the impetus for assessing the prospects for similar strategies on other topics of contemporary global concern. This book offers a timely addition to the dynamic and growing literature on the practice and consequences of international governance and should appeal to academics, civil society experts, and foreign policy practitioners working in fields such as security, human rights, and the environment.

      Summary
      • The World Trade Organization (WTO) is one of the most important international organizations in existence today. It contains a set of disciplines that affect the ability of governments to impose trade restrictions, and has helped to support the steady expansion of international trade since the 1950s. It is a unique organization in providing a framework for member states to make binding policy commitments that are enforced through a unique dispute settlement system and a variety of transparency mechanisms. Despite - or because of - its success, the WTO has recently become the focus of vociferous protests by anti-globalization activists. This book separates the facts from the propaganda and provides an accessible overview of the WTO's history, structure and policies as well as a discussion of the future of the organization. It also confronts the criticisms of the WTO and assesses their validity.

      Summary
      • This book is designed as a supplementary text for courses in international relations. Using a debating approach, the book encourages students to think critically about some of the most important topics in world politics. The book provides extensive pedagogy to aid student comprehension. Each pair of debates (24 total) is prefaced by headnotes, which provide background information necessary to understand the content of the debates. The debates are then followed by questions for discussion, and a list of suggested readings for additional study. Among the topics covered are: the future of Germany, the future of Japan, the role of the U.S. in Europe and chemical weapons in war.

      Summary
      • In this passionate and controversial work, director and critic Rustom Bharucha presents the first major critique of intercultural theatre from a 'Third World' perspective. Bharucha questions the assumptions underlying the theatrical visions of some of the twentieth century's most prominent theatre practitioners and theorists, including Antonin Artaud, Jerzsy Grotowski, and Peter Brook. He contends that Indian theatre has been grossly mythologised and taken out of context by Western directors and critics. And he presents a detailed dramaturgical analysis of what he describes as an intracultural theatre project, providing an alternative vision of the possibilities of true cultural pluralism. Theatre and the World bravely challenges much of today's 'multicultural' theatre movement. It will be vital reading for anyone interested in the creation or discussion of a truly non-Eurocentric world theatre.

      Summary
      • Gendering Addiction brings to bear the ideas of feminist sociology of knowledge, situated knowledge and ignorance, and standpoint epistemologies upon an injustice that has grave consequences for the human rights of drug-using women. Despite concerted efforts since the 1970s, most women who need drug treatment in the US and UK still do not receive it--because of ways treatment is delivered. This book examines ongoing attempts to meet a basic need that has not been met. Knowledge-making practices in drug research and treatment make it resistant to the gendered, classed and racialized power differentials that structure the lives of drug-using women. Without such knowledge, what we need to know about women's specific needs will continue to not to be known. A critical historical and sociological framework is crafted showing how feminist knowledge production is a promising route for overcoming the pervasive 'epistemology of ignorance' that prevails.

      • Gendering Addiction brings to bear the ideas of feminist sociology of knowledge, situated knowledge and ignorance, and standpoint epistemologies upon an injustice that has grave consequences for the human rights of drug-using women. Despite concerted efforts since the 1970s, most women who need drug treatment in the US and UK still do not receive it-because of ways treatment is delivered.

      Summary
      • This study, by two leading scholars in the field, draws on feminist theory and science and technology studies to uncover a basic injustice for the human rights of drug-using women: most women who need drug treatment in the US and UK do not get it. Summary
      • This book explores the significance of sport in the understanding of past and current societal dynamics in the Arab world. It examines sport in relation to cultural, political and economic changes in the Arab World, including nation-state building, the formation of national identity and international relations in post-colonial context. ; This book sets out a new critical perspective on our understanding of the society and history of the Arab World through the study of sport - an area rarely referred to in literature on the region. The book examines sport in relation to cultural, political and economic changes, including nation-state building, the formation of national identity and international relations in post-colonial context. It also analyzes the commercialization of sport and the growth of sport media broadcasting in the Arab World. The author explores how sport in the Arab World has been the site of political agitation and social contestation, arguing that the sports arena can still offer the possibility of Arab nations to compete at international level and the Arab people a chance to claim some symbolic victory against their hard socio-economic and political realities.

      Summary
      • Terrorist attacks. UN sanctions. The creation of the International Criminal Court. The war on Iraq. In each of these headline events, the complex relationship of international law and world politics comes into play. This volume introduces the concepts, the rules and the functioning of international law in a way that is accessible to students of political science. Scott covers such core topics as the nature of legal argument, the negotiation and implementation of multilateral treaties, and the place of the United Nations, other intergovernmental organizations, and non-state actors in the international legal system. Equally important, she connects the actual content of laws dealing with, for example, human rights, the use of force, the environment and genocide to current issues and problems. Case studies within the chapters bring the real world of world politics to life. Covering the full range of this subfield of international relations, this text explains the role that international law plays in the changing arena of world politics.

      Summary
      • This unique reader goes beyond the traditional concept of International Relations as focused only on interactions between states. It addresses all the players in the current global political scene, from international companies and intergovernmental organisations to traditional states and terrorist organisations. Mansbach/Rhodes blend conceptual writings on International Relations with current events coverage from journalistic sources. Case materials are drawn from all major geographic regions in order to emphasise the global nature of these issues in the post-Cold War period. Each chapter approaches the key topics first from a scholarly/theoretical view, then follows with readings presenting a news/current events context. The readings provide a stimulus for informed debate and discussion and they encourage students to view daily events as part of a larger process of change.

      Summary
      • "Though Britain's descent from global imperial power began in World War II and continued over the subsequent decades, with decolonization, military withdrawal, and integration into the European Union, its foreign policy has remained that of a Great Power. David M. McCourt maintains that the lack of a fundamental reorientation of Britain's foreign policy cannot be explained only by material or economic factors, or even by an essential British international "identity." Rather, he argues, the persistence of Britain's place in world affairs can best be explained by the prominent international role that Britain assumed and into which it was thrust by other nations, notably France and the U.S., over these years. Using a role-based theory of state action in international politics based on symbolic interactionism and the work of George Herbert Mead, Britain and World Power Since 1945 puts forward a novel interpretation of Britain's engagement in four key international episodes: the Suez Crisis of 1956, the Skybolt Crisis of 1962, Britain's second application to the European Economic Council in 1966-67, and Britain's reinvasion of the Falklands in 1982. McCourt concludes with a discussion of international affairs since the end of the Cold War and the implications for the future of British foreign policy"--
