      Summary
      • As an influential spokesman for a considerable segment of the late 19th-century American populace, Cook was probably without a rival. This study attempts to ascertain the "why" of his career: to account both for the factors which contributed to his rapid rise as well as those which led to his eventual demise. Throughout, an effort is made to convey not simply the account of an individual who has succumbed to the passing fortunes of historical fame, but also insights into the character of a conservative American Protestantism that was more complex and varied than many have realized.

      Summary
      • The history of the study of popular culture in American academia since its (re)introduction in 1967 is filled with misunderstanding and opposition. From the first, proponents of the study of this major portion of American culture made clear that they were interested in making popular culture a supplement to the usual courses in such fields as literature, sociology, history, philosophy, and the other humanities and social sciences; nobody proposed that study of popular culture replace the other disciplines, but many suggested that it was time to reexamine the accepted courses and see if they were still viable. Opposition to the status quo always causes anxiety and opposition, but when the issues are clarified, often opposition and anxiety melt away, as they now are doing.Anxiety and opposition were generated on another level when people in academic and curricular power felt that voices were being raised that questioned their credentials and control. They flailed out with every argument at their command, generally thinking only of their self interest and not that of the students and the future of academic education. Generally this wall of opposition has also been breached. The Popular Culture Association and its many friends and backers in academia, in the United States and abroad, has demonstrated that the study of our everyday and dominant culure should be taken seriously, understandingly and analytically, just as all other aspects of culture should be. Taken that way the study can be useful in developing better educated and responsible citizens from the cradle to the grave. The humanities and social sciences are too important for any portionespecially the majority portionto be ignored or downplayed. The study of popular culture constitutes a significant and important element, one that can be ignored only at peril"

      Summary
      • How does a 'national' popular culture form and grow over time in a nation comprised of immigrants? How have immigrants used popular culture in America, and how has it used them?. Immigration and American Popular Culture looks at the relationship between American immigrants and the popular culture industry in the twentieth century. Through a series of case studies, Rachel Rubin and Jeffrey Melnick uncover how specific trends in popular culture--such as portrayals of European immigrants as gangsters in 1930s cinema, the zoot suits of the 1940s, the influence of Jamaican Americans on rap in the 19.

      Summary
      • In Leaders of the Pack: Girl Groups of the 1960s and their Influence on Popular Culture musician and music historian Sean MacLeod surveys the hundreds of girl groups that appeared not only in the United States but also in Great Britain during the early 1960s. This study corrects the neglect of their critical contribution of popular music history by exploring the social and political climate from which the girl groups emerged and their effect, in turn, on local and national music and culture. Leaders of the Pack is essential reading for students, scholars, and fans of 1960s music and culture. It will further interest anyone interested in women's studies, modern American and British culture, and music history, with important forays into such topics as the Civil Rights Movement, second and third wave feminism, and post-war life.
      • Review: A British songwriter and producer, MacLeod has compiled a detailed history of the early 1960s girl musical groups-in both the US and Great Britain-and their legacies. Drawing on a range of sources (some primary but most secondary), MacLeod begins with a history and an analysis of the Shirelles and moves on to the Crystals, the Ronettes, the Marvelettes, the Supremes, the Vandellas, and the Shangri-Las. He also discusses such producers as Berry Gordy and Phil Spector. With the arrival, in the mid-1960s, of the Beatles and other British groups (who were significantly influenced by the girl groups), the musical scene changed significantly. MacLeod follows the story through the remainder of the 20th century and into the 21st, discussing The Beach Boys, The Who, The Rolling Stones, the Ramones, Blondie, Madonna, the Spice Girls, Lady Gaga, and Britney Spears-all seemingly influenced by the earlier girl groups. There are lengthy notes and a detailed bibliography, demonstrating the author's wide range of sources, but few illustrations. With its wide chronological coverage, this is a useful addition to the literature. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through faculty; general readers. CHOICE

      • Jewish humor, with its rational skepticism and cutting social criticism, permeates American popular culture. Scholars of humor-from Sigmund Freud to Woody Allen-have studied the essence of the Jewish joke, at once a defense mechanism against a hostile world and a means of cultural affirmation. Where did this wit originate? Why do Jewish humorists work at the margins of so many diverse cultures? What accounts for the longevity of the Jewish joke? Do oppressed people, as African American author Ralph Ellison suggested, slip their yoke when they change the joke? Citing examples from prominent humorists and stand-up comics, this book examines the phenomenon of Jewish humor from its biblical origins to its prevalence in the modern diaspora, revealing a mother lode of wit in language, literature, folklore, music and history.

The relationship between Faulkner, a novelist not known for public accessibility, and the culture of the masses makes this an exceptional volume indeed. That the author of dense, riddling novels like The Sound and the Fury, Absalom, Absalom! and other works associated with high modernist art could also appeal to the popular tastes and be influenced by popular culture is a phenomenon made evident in this collection of essays. Faulkner's works reveal that he was drawn to popular culture repeatedly and that this "lowbrow art" provided material for his works and for his livelihood. His attempt to write a novel with wide app

      Summary
      • "White on Black" is a history of the development of stereotypes of black people in Europe and America from the late-18th century. Its purpose is to show the pervasiveness of prejudice against blacks throughout the Western world as expressed in stock-in-trade racist imagery and pariah caricatures. Its effects, using a range of powerful illustrations, is to tease out the hidden assumptions of even those who view themselves as unprejudiced. The book looks chronologically at "Europe's Africa", from medieval perceptions, through slavery and abolition to the explorers, settlers and missionaries of the colonial period. It also examines the persistence of stereotypical representations in the multicultural societies of today, and in their relations with Africa. Jan Nederveen Pieterse reveals the key images by which Blacks have been depicted in the West - as servants, entertainers, and athletes, and as popular types such as Sambo and Uncle Tom in the US, Golliwog in Britain, Bamboula in France and Black Peter in the Netherlands. He looks at conventional portrayals of Blacks in the nursery, in the area of sexuality, in commerce and advertising and analyzes the conceptual roots of the stereotypes. Integral to the text are 150 black-and-white and 40 colour illustrations, selected from a collection of negrophilia from around the world. They depict engravings and lithographs, books and newspaper illustrations, advertisements, toothpaste cartons, chocolate, coffee and cigarette wrappings, biscuit tins, trinkets, dolls, posters and comic strips. The impact of the images, many familiar from everyday life, aims to raise questions about the expression of power within popular culture, and the force of caricature, humour and parody as instruments of oppression.
