      Summary
      • Recent historical work has underscored the important role of non-human animals in the development of human societies, religions, politics and the human sense of self. By the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries in France, animals routinely served as human exemplars, while a growing urbanization engendered greater antagonism towards real animals. The fear of rabies increased during a period of plague and endemic warfare. This article explores how, in the context of animal exemplarity and growing human animosity towards dogs and wolves, the figure of the criminal was remade into the mad dog and rabid wolf. This transformation identified criminals with the fear and antagonism directed against real wolves and rabid dogs, and thus supplied a new foundation for the community’s judgement of criminal malfeasance.

      Summary
      • The musical achievements of the so-called 'Franco-Flemish School' have attracted many writers, yet Bruges itself has still to be put back on the map of European music history. This book describes how the people of Bruges shaped their acoustic environment and gave musical expression to their spiritual needs. It is based on a scrutiny of musical sources, stylistic trends in music, composers' achievements, and the function of musical genres; all these are seen against a reconstruction, from archival sources, of the socio-economic context of the art of music - an art which, in all its various manifestations, 'high' and 'low', sacred and secular, courtly and civic, polyphonic and monophonic, mirrors later medieval urban culture as a whole.
      • Review: 'Brilliant and at times provocatively written ... a remarkable achievement; a major contribution to our understanding of fifteenth-century music.' Early Music 'Exceptionally rich in facts, ideas and hypotheses, enough of them to occupy scholars for years to come.' Times Literary Supplement
