      Summary
      • Scope and content: "An illustrated guide to Vicksburg's monuments and memorials. Includes an illustrated driving tour that visitors can use as they drive through the park"--Provided by publisher.
      • In the heyday of Civil War commemoration at the turn of the twentieth century, Mississippi's Vicksburg National Military Park was considered "the art park of the South." By 1920, more than 160 portrait statues, busts, and reliefs of Vicksburg's defenders under Gen. John C. Pemberton and the besieging Union army commanded by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant lined the tour route along the earthworks around the Gibraltar of the Confederacy. Most of the memorial art and architecture was built in the classical revival Beaux-Arts style popular following the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893. The federal government, states, and individual patrons commissioned dozens of sculptors and architects to create these enduring structures, marking the historic battlefield and commemorating the men and events involved in the campaign and siege of Vicksburg. The Memorial Art and Architecture of Vicksburg National Military Park chronicles the preservation of the battlefield and its establishment as the southernmost of five national military parks formed in the 1890s. It illuminates and illustrates the complex patronage, design, and construction processes--including bronze casting and stone carving--in a fluent fashion appealing to general readers and Civil War buffs, as well as to scholars of collective memory and American cultural history. This compact guidebook is handy for use in the field (on foot or in the car) and in the comfort of a favorite reading chair. It includes an illustrated driving tour, thematic discussions of Vicksburg's equestrian monuments and portrait statuary, biographical information about the designers, and a glossary of monument terminology. Panhorst's insightful analysis and stunning full color photographs of Vicksburg's memorial art and architecture help readers appreciate fully the beauty and significance of "the art park of the South."

      Summary
      • This supplement is the first in a planned series of updates to the Art and Architecture Thesaurus, published in three volumes in 1990. Intended for use in conjunction with the main work, the supplement reports changes in four main categories: terminology, hierarchy structure, additions to the bibliography of sources, and changes in application guidelines. The bulk of the supplement is devoted to new and changed terms. This information is presented in three ways: an overall alphabetical listing that contains all the changes and provides specific information about each change; a section that provides both the original and revised form (e.g. "load-bearing walls" changed to "bearing walls") for changed descriptors, guide terms, and lead-in terms; and a summary that provides an overview of the major term changes grouped according to the type of change. This supplement provides an important update to the evolving terminology in the world of art and architecture.

      Summary
      • De Stijl ("The Style") was the name given to the work of the architects, designers and artists associated with the magazine of the same title edited by Theo van Doesburg and founded in Holland in 1917. De Stijl was international in its outlook: in contact with the Bauhaus and the Russian Constructivists, it helped create the ideology and formal language of modernism. This survey illuminates the works of Mondrian and the architecture and designs of Oud, Wils, Huszar and Rietveld, all of whom aimed to create an objective art concerned with universal values, expressed in primary geometric forms and pure colors. 157 illus., 17 in color.

      Summary
      • International multi-award winning architect, Romaldo Giurgoila (b. Rome, 1920) is best known in Australia as the principal architect of the New Parliament House in Canberra. His latest major work is St. Patricks Cathedral, Parramatta, a new Cathedral complex which incorporates the old 1857 building which was destroyed by fire in 1996. The opening of the new Cathedral was celebrated on 29 November 2003. For Romaldo Giurgola this project provided an opportunity to reflect on his lifes work and to incorporate in the buildings, and the art works which were specially commissioned for them, the architectural principles he values most. These have been developed over many decades from the time of his education in Italy through to academic post and architectural projects undertaken in the USA, Europe, Australia and Asia. He regards architecture as a symbolic expression of peoples cultural identities and aspirations. With this in mind, he has created in Parramatta a singular masterpiece characterised by its simplicity, serenity and contemplative character. This beautifully written and illustrated publication provides eloquent insights into the art of architecture and Romaldo Giurgolas spatial philosophy.
