Before the Black Death : studies in the "crisis" of the early fourteenth century : Anglo-American seminar on the medieval economy and society : Papers / edited by Bruce M. S. Campbell.

      • Manchester : Manchester University Press 1991
      ISBN
      • 0719032083
      • 0719039274
      Summary
      • These five papers were originally presented at a residential seminar on medieval economy and society held at Chester in July 1989 under the auspices of the Historical Geography Research Group of the Institute of British Geographers. The events in question stand at a chronological watershed between the expansive demographic and economic trends of the 12th and 13th centuries and the contraction and stagnation which characterized the later 14th and 15th centuries. The essay by John H. Munro serves as a reminder that the "crisis" of the early 14th century was a European as much as an exclusively British phenomenon, and the other essays deal with population, agriculture, taxation and the effects of climatic change, reviewing existing knowledge and offering the results of fresh research.

Coronations : medieval and early modern monarchic ritual : Conference on medieval coronations and related rituals : Selected papers / edited by János M. Bak.

      Published
      • Berkeley : University of California Press c1990
      ISBN
      • 0520066774 (alk. paper)
      Summary
      • Fascination with royal pomp and circumstance is as old as kingship itself. The authors of "Coronations" examine royal ceremonies from the ninth to the sixteenth century, and find the very essence of the monarchical state in its public presentation of itself. This book is an enlightened response to the revived interest in political history, written from a perspective that cultural historians will also enjoy. The symbolic and ritual acts that served to represent and legitimate monarchical power in medieval and early modern Europe include not only royal and papal coronations but also festive entries, inaugural feasts, and rulers' funerals. Fifteen leading scholars from North America, Britain, France, Germany, Poland, and Denmark explore the forms and the underlying meanings of such events, as well as problems of relevant scholarship on these subjects. All the contributions demonstrate the importance of in-depth study of rulership for the understanding of premodern power structures. Emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary approaches, drawing on the findings of ethnography and anthropology, combined with rigorous critical evaluation of the written and iconic evidence. The editor's historiographical introduction surveys the past and present of this field of study and proposes some new lines of inquiry. "For 'reality' is not a one-dimensional matter: even if we can establish what actually transpired, we still need to ask how it was perceived by those present."

      Summary
      • Over the past fifty years, Francoise Henry has been the leading authority on the history of early Irish art. A pupil of Henri Focillon, she united two traditions of scholarship, one French and one Irish, and her understanding of the European context within which the art of early Christian Ireland developed has had a profound influence on subsequent research. These three volumes bring together the articles that Dr. Henry published on Irish art and its European links. The first volume is concerned with enamel and metalwork, a field in which the author specialized from the beginning. Emailleurs d'Occident looks at Western enamels, among which the Irish examples figure prominently, and the development of Irish enamelling is treated separately in the following study. Metalwork is also featured, in the form of a number of Dr. Henry's important studies on hanging-bowls, croziers, and chalices. Volume I contents include: Preface by C. Curle; Enamels; Emailleurs d'Occident; Irish Enamels of the Dark Ages and their Relation to the Cloisonne Techniques; Hanging Bowls, with Supplement; A Bronze Escutcheon Found in the River Bann; On Some Early Christian Objects in the Ulster Museum; Deux objets de bronze irlandais au Musee des Antiquites Nationales; Le calice trouve a Derrynaflan; Les crosses pre-romanes; The Effects of the Viking Invasion on Irish Art; Additional Notes; Index.

      Summary
      • Slaves were part of the fabric of English society throughout the Anglo-Saxon era and the 12th-century, but as the base of the social pyramid, English slaves have left no known written records. However, there are extensive references to them throughout the documents and writings of the period. This study seeks to convey a picture of slaves and slavery in England, viewed against the background of English society as a whole. This study shows how slaves came to be enslaved, their rights and obligations, how they were freed and the nature of such freedom, how the institution changed, and how it related to the appearance of serfdom, which came to characterize post-Conquest rural society. The survey concludes that the concepts of enslavement were embedded in the religious imagery of the period.

      Summary
      • Early Music History is devoted to the study of music from the early Middle Ages to the end of the seventeenth century. It demands the highest standards of scholarship from its contributors, all of whom are leading academics in their fields. It gives preference to studies pursuing interdisciplinary approaches and to those developing novel methodological ideas. The scope is exceptionally broad and includes manuscript studies, textual criticism, iconography, studies of the relationship between words and music and the relationship between music and society. Articles in volume nineteen include: Mapping the soundscape: church music in English towns 1450-1550; Ritual and ceremony in the Spanish royal chapel c1559-1561; Royal image-making and textual interplay in Gilbert Banaster's O Maria et Elizabeth.
