Topsell, a theologian, derived his knowledge from the work of Conrad Gesner, the Swiss naturalist. John Rowland produced the 1658 edition. Thomas Moffet's book had been published posthumously in Latin in 1634 by Sir Theodore Mayerne , and had been written in 1590. It was partly compiled from the writings of Edward Wotton, Conrad Gesner and papers left to Moffet by Thomas Penny. Moffett's book was the earliest entomological work to contain scientific illustrations. (John L. Thornton ; R. I. J. Tully, "Scientific Books, Libraries and Collectors", p. 137.)
  • The illustrations in Gesner were reproduced by Topsell.
  • Includes indexes.
  • "The historie of four-footed beastes" was first published in 1607. "The historie of serpents; or, the second booke of living creatures" was published in 1608 and is generally published with the first book.
