About the library
The NCMME Library has been described as a Collection of National Importance by the British Library. The collection is made up of material from many individuals as well as material from the collections of the former nationalised coal industry along with the libraries of Institutes of Further Education that offered mining-related courses. We hold runs of important journals as well as HM Mines Inspectors Reports from c1880, HSE and BCURA publications and a good selection of mining-related fiction. We continue to add to the collection by purchase and donation.
We cover social history, legislation, technical information including shaft sinking, coal-getting, transport, coal processing, mine ventilation and safety as well as geology and regeneration of former coal-mining areas ; we have a good collection of trade literature of coal-mining machinery.
