      Summary
      • This new flexi edition of an architectural and historical journey across the world's greatest bridges explains why these structures continue to fascinate us as examples of engineering genius and artistic vision. Starting with ancient bridges built by the Mongol and Roman Empires through to today's most striking examples of bridges, this book examines the history, legends, and people behind the world's most fascinating bridges. Stunning double-page spreads filled with photographs, plans, drawings, and informative texts deepen the reader's appreciation of the science and technology of bridge building. The book also introduces historic events in which bridges have played a central role, profiles the figures who commissioned and built the bridges and offers surprising re-examinations of some of the world's most familiar bridges. Bridges included are: Tarr Steps; Ponte Vecchio; Charles Bridge; Zig-Zag Bridge; Pont Neuf; Bridge of Sighs; Iron Bridge; Clifton Suspension Bridge; Forth Bridge; Tower Bridge; Sydney Harbour Bridge; Golden Gate Bridge; Bridge over the River Kwai; Bosphorous Bridge; and Millau Viaduct. "Bridges that Changed the World" is a celebration of our steadfast desire to connect with and discover the world around us.

      Summary
      • The Forth Bridge has long been recognised as one of the finest examples of Victorian engineering on the planet and has achieved an iconic status as one of the great feats of western civilisation since its official opening in 1890. Lavishly illustrated throughout with stunning archive images, Elspeth Wills uncovers the human story behind 'the engineering marvel': the story of the Briggers. It is a story that has never been told before - of ordinary men working on an extraordinary structure in an often hostile and dangerous environment. Recognised throughout the world as an enduring icon of Scotland, the Forth Bridge is more than just a testament to the genius of Victorian engineering, it is a monument to all those who worked to realise its vision and to the scores of lives that were lost in the process. In this groundbreaking new work, Elspeth Wills gives a voice to the forgotten heroes who helped to make the ambition of the Bridge a reality.

      Summary
      • Structural engineering is central to the design of a building. How the building behaves when subjected to various forces the weight of the materials used to build it, the weight of the occupants or the traffic it carries, the force of the wind etc is fundamental to its stability. The alliance between architecture and structural engineering is therefore critical to the successful design and completion of the buildings and infrastructure that surrounds us. Yet structure is often cloaked in mathematics which many architects and surveyors find difficult to understand. How Structures Work has been written to explain the behaviour of structures in a clear way without resorting to complex mathematics. This new edition includes a new chapter on construction materials, and significant revisions to, and reordering of the existing chapters. It is aimed at all who require a good qualitative understanding of structures and their behaviour, and as such will be of benefit to students of architecture, architectural history, building surveying and civil engineering. The straightforward, non-mathematical approach ensures it will also be suitable for a wider audience including building administrators, archaeologists and the interested layman.

      Summary
      • The successful design and construction of iconic new buildings relies on a range of advanced technologies, in particular on advanced modelling techniques. In response to the increasingly complex buildings demanded by clients and architects, structural engineers have developed a range of sophisticated modelling software to carry out the necessary structural analysis and design work. Advanced Modelling Techniques in Structural Design introduces numerical analysis methods to both students and design practitioners. It illustrates the modelling techniques used to solve structural design problems, covering most of the issues that an engineer might face, including lateral stability design of tall buildings; earthquake; progressive collapse; fire, blast and vibration analysis; non-linear geometric analysis and buckling analysis . Resolution of these design problems are demonstrated using a range of prestigious projects around the world, including the Buji Khalifa; Willis Towers; Taipei 101; the Gherkin; Millennium Bridge; Millau viaduct and the Forth Bridge, illustrating the practical steps required to begin a modelling exercise and showing how to select appropriate software tools to address specific design problems.
      • Review: "The book will be of interest to specialised structural analysis practitioners who would like to broaden their practical knowledge of the scope of other providers of currently available acceptable analysis software for more specialised structural analyses and scenarios." (The Structural Engineer, March 2016)

      Summary
      • The first Tay Bridge collapsed into the sea in 1879 only 18 months after it had opened, drowning 72 people travelling by train to Dundee. Shock reverberated through Britain, and the public demanded answers. The bridge had been hailed as a triumph of construction, and its fall shook society's confidence in the excellence of Victorian engineering. This epic tale of engineering follows the rise and fall of the career of engineer Thomas Bouch, ostracised from the engineering community when his bridge crashed into the Tay estuary. Over four decades, a fierce and dirty railway war drove forward the construction of the two largest railway bridges in the world, symbols of a modernising Scotland. Charles McKean offers new conclusions about why the first Tay Bridge collapsed and tells how the Forth and Tay bridges eventually became reality. He follows the railway battle for Scotland from 1845 - 95 and the people it involved: from the Victorian entrepreneurs, poets, journalists, lawyers, town councils; to the engineers, briggers, excavators and rivet boys; to the pioneering and inventive contractor William Arrol - who constructed the bridges that stand today. Meticulously researched and vividly told, "Battle for the North" explores the complicated reality underlying the Victorian pursuit of progress.

      Summary
      • This book has been written to explain the behaviour of structures in a clear way. Using the minimum of mathematics it explains the structural concepts, illustrating them with many historical and contemporary examples and allowing readers to build up a general understanding of structures.
      • The alliance between architecture and structural engineering is fundamental to the design of the buildings and bridges around us. Anyone who needs or wants to "understand" a building must have a good understanding of the structural concepts involved. Yet "structure" is often cloaked in mathematics - which many find difficult to get to grips with. How Structures Work has been written to explain the behaviour of structures in a clear way without resorting to complex mathematics. Using the minimum of mathematics it explains the structural concepts clearly, illustrated by many historical and contemporary examples, allowing readers to build up a general understanding of structures. In this way they can easily comprehend the structural aspects of buildings for themselves. Primarily aimed at students who require a good qualitative understanding of the behaviour of structures and their materials, it will be of particular interest to students of architecture and building surveying, plus architectural historians and conservationists. The straightforward, non-mathematical approach ensures it will also be suitable for a wider audience including building administrators, archaeologists and the interested layman.
      • Review: The reader can equally well read How Structures Work straight through or pick it up and wade in almost randomly. There are no two consecutive pages without some enlightenment. ( Timber Framing , December 2009)
