      Summary
      • In his time, Isambard Kingdom Brunel was the world's greatest engineer. His list of achievements is truly breathtaking, the Thames Tunnel, the first underwater tunnel in the world, the SS Great Britain, the first propeller-driven, iron-built ocean-going ship, the Clifton Suspension Bridge, then the longest span of any bridge in the world and the Great Western Railway. History has been kind to his memory, many of his creations still exist and he is lauded by historians as truly a 'Great Briton'. In this, the first full-scale biography for almost sixty years, Colin Maggs presents a portrait of a complex, ambitious and determined genius. But the Brunel that emerges is not without flaws; he made mistakes, personal and technical, and he wasn't always right but never admitted he was wrong. Drawing on Brunel's diaries, letters and business papers we see the real Brunel, a more human figure, emerging from behind the towering structures and machines he created. Includes over eighty colour and black and white photographs and plans of Brunel's designs.

Several of his main engineering achievements are examined through photographs, drawings and other historical objects, including the Clifton Suspension Bridge, the Thames Tunnel and the incredible influence he had on the railways, travel by ship and even the Crimean War. A simple timeline helps readers see the span of his achievements over time. In the Ways into History series, original illustrations and simple text bring the past alive, while questions and activities encourage historical research and build up confidence and enthusiasm for British history at Key stage 1. Summary
      • Abstract: This Waste Water National Policy Statement (NPS) will be used by the decision maker (formerly the Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC)) as the primary basis for deciding development consent applications for waste water developments that fall within the definition of of Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) in the Planning Act 2008. The NPS sets out a justification for new waste water infrastructure and provides information on to two projects - the proposed treatment works at Deephams in North East London, and the Thames Tunnel which will carry waste water from sewage overflows which currently run into the Thames. Under the new guidelines, applicants of Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects will need to consider aspects such as the standard of design, whether any alternatives exist to the project, pollution control and wildlife conservation. The Government is taking measures to lessen demands on waste water infrastructure in England through sustainable drainage systems. However, more infrastructure is required to prevent environmental damage and poor water quality.

      Summary
      • Brunel and London. It might not seem an obvious association, but John Christopher puts the case that it was London, not Bristol, that was the most important centre of Brunel's activities. It was here that he lived, worked and died, and the city is dotted with examples of his works from the Thames Tunnel to the Hungerford Suspension Bridge.
      • Brunel and London. It might not seem an obvious association, but John Christopher puts the case that it was London, not Bristol, that was the most important centre of Brunel's activities. It was here that he lived, worked and died. The city is dotted with examples of his works, some obvious and some less so, from the subaquatic Thames Tunnel between Wapping to Rotherhithe where he cut his engineering teeth and was almost killed in a sudden deluge, to the Hungerford suspension bridge between Charing Cross and the South Bank - mostly forgotten but parts of it still exist - the two stations at Paddington with the Great Western Railway main line running to the west and, of course, his final steamship, the vast Great Eastern which was built at Millwall and marked the end of his career and his life. Less familiar are Brunel's connections with the Crystal Palace, designed by Joseph Paxton for the Great Exhibition of 1851, and the two towers he built when it was relocated to Sydenham in south London. John Christopher, an acknowledged expert on Brunel, takes us on a tour of London, examining the relationship between city and engineer. This is the latest in a series of books which are about rediscovering Brunel's works in your area.

      Summary
      • Isambard Kingdom Brunel was Britain's greatest engineer, he was the man who built everything on a huge scale, he built Britain's biggest ship, some of Britain's most spectacular bridges, a tunnel under the Thames and the finest railway line in Britain, the London to Bristol route of the Great Western Railway. Everything he did was on a scale not seen before, not just in Britain, but in the world. Brunel left a legacy of industrial architecture and design, from the vaulted roof of Paddington station to the SS Great Britain, the first true ocean greyhound, from the Clifton Suspension Bridge to the Tamar Bridge, which bears his name on its approaches. His life was one of superlatives - bigger, wider, taller and faster. Nearly drowning in the Thames Tunnel, he eventually suffered a stroke aboard his Great Eastern, the world's largest vessel for almost half a century, and died two days before her maiden voyage. As the historian Dan Cruikshank put it, Brunel was quite simply 'a one-man Industrial Revolution'. Here, John Christopher tells the story of the man and his tunnels, bridges, railways, ships and buildings, with many new illustrations accompanying the old, showing the changes time has made to Brunel's greatest legacy - the things he designed and built that we still take for granted and use every day, over a century and a half since his death.

      Summary
      • Marc Isambard Brunel (1769-1849) nourished an extraordinary intellect, in spite of a tyrannical father. After serving in Louis XVI's navy as an officer cadet, he left France and, at the age of 30, came to Britain via America. This work explores this remarkable man's life and brings his considerable achievements into focus for the modern historian.
