      Summary
      • This book offers a comprehensive introduction to the life, music and compositional aesthetic of French composer Maurice Ravel (1875-1937). It reassesses this private and elusive musician, examining his work in detail within its cultural context.
      • This Companion provides a comprehensive introduction to the life, music and compositional aesthetic of French composer Maurice Ravel (1875-1937). Leading international scholars offer a powerful reassessment of this most private and elusive musician, examining his work in detail within its cultural context. Supported by many music examples, the volume explores the full range of Ravel's work - piano repertory, chamber works, orchestral music, ballets, songs and operas - and makes illuminating comparisons with the music of Couperin, Gounod, Chabrier and Debussy. The essays present the latest research focusing on topics such as Ravel's exoticism and Spanishness and conclude by analysing the performance and reception of his music, including previously untranslated reviews. Marking the 125th anniversary of Ravel's birth, the Companion as a whole aims to secure a solid foundation for Ravel studies in the twenty-first century and will appeal to all enthusiasts and students of his music.
      • Review: "Mawer's excellent volume brings together essays by leading international Ravel scholars...One expects only the highest quality scholarship from Cambridge, and this book certainly fulfills that promise." Choice

      Summary
      • This work encompasses the breadth and depth of guitar performance, featuring 13 essays covering different traditions, styles, and instruments, written by some of the most influential players, teachers, and guitar historians in the world.
      • From the first mention in courtly poetry of the thirteenth century to enormous global popularity in the twentieth, the guitar and its development comprises multiple histories, each characterised by distinct styles, playing techniques, repertories and socio-cultural roles. These histories simultaneously span popular and classical styles, contemporary and historical practices, written and unwritten traditions and western and non-western cultures. This is the first book to encompass the breadth and depth of guitar performance, featuring thirteen essays covering different traditions, styles, and instruments, written by some of the most influential players, teachers, and guitar historians in the world. The coverage of the book allows the player to understand both the analogies and differences between guitar traditions, and all styles, from baroque, classical, country, blues, and rock to flamenco, African, Celtic, and instrument making will share the same platform. As musical training is increasingly broadened this comprehensive book will become an indispensable resource.
      • Review: 'A certain novelty of perspective makes for an enlightening read, leaving the reader at the centre of historical and sociological threads that run across the essays as opposed to hopping from island to island of isolated stylistic pieces ... This wide-angled view permeates the whole book, making for an engaging acknowledgement that social context and direct application of, and experimentation with, technique can transcend genre ... strikes a neat balance between comprehensiveness and depth ...'. Summary
      • In essays by eminent scholars, this companion places the Lied in its full context - at once musical, literary, and cultural - with chapters devoted to focal composers as well as important issues, such as the way in which the Lied influenced other musical genres.
      • Beginning several generations before Schubert, the Lied first appears as domestic entertainment. In the century that follows it becomes one of the primary modes of music-making. By the time German song comes to its presumed conclusion with Richard Strauss's 1948 Vier letzte Lieder, this rich repertoire has moved beyond the home and keyboard accompaniment to the symphony hall. This is a 2004 introductory chronicle of this fascinating genre. In essays by eminent scholars, this Companion places the Lied in its full context - at once musical, literary, and cultural - with chapters devoted to focal composers as well as important issues, such as the way in which the Lied influenced other musical genres, its use as a musical commodity, and issues of performance. The volume is framed by a detailed chronology of German music and poetry from the late 1730s to the present and also contains a comprehensive bibliography.

      Summary
      • This Companion examines the lives of medieval women by focusing on the texts that emerged from and shaped their experience.
      • The Cambridge Companion to Medieval Women's Writing seeks to recover the lives and particular experiences of medieval women by concentrating on various kinds of texts: the texts they wrote themselves as well as texts that attempted to shape, limit, or expand their lives. The first section investigates the roles traditionally assigned to medieval women (as virgins, widows, and wives); it also considers female childhood and relations between women. The second section explores social spaces, including textuality itself: for every surviving medieval manuscript bespeaks collaborative effort. It considers women as authors, as anchoresses 'dead to the world', and as preachers and teachers in the world staking claims to authority without entering a pulpit. The final section considers the lives and writings of remarkable women, including Marie de France, Heloise, Joan of Arc, Julian of Norwich, Margery Kempe, and female lyricists and romancers whose names are lost, but whose texts survive.
      • Review: 'While The Cambridge Companion to Medieval Women's Writing comprehensiveness makes it valuable as an introduction to the field, individual articles such as Summit's, as well as Christopher Cannon's argument in 'enclosure' for anchoritic life and literature as 'crucial arenas in which the modern self was first defined and mapped' will also recommend this volume as are source for advanced scholars.' Arthuriana 'Dinshaw and Wallace are to be congratulated for achieving excellent coverage of the subject, and for producing a volume which more than meets the high standards set by others in this series.' Women's History Magazine '... a significant overview of women's writing during the Middle Ages ...'. Sixteenth Century Journal 'Readers with an interest in medieval women's writing will find plenty of stimulating and original material in this new companion.' Anglia '... the volume offers an impressive range of essays representing a variety of methodologies and perspectives. ... the volume makes an equal worthy read from beginning to end ...' Envoi

      Summary
      • In the last fifty years Irish poets have produced some of the most exciting poetry in contemporary literature, writing about love and sexuality, violence and history, country and city. This 2003 book provides a unique introduction to major figures such as Seamus Heaney, and also introduces the reader to significant precursors like Louis MacNeice or Patrick Kavanagh, and vital contemporaries and successors: among others, Thomas Kinsella, Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill and Paul Muldoon. Readers will find discussions of Irish poetry from the traditional to the modernist, written in Irish as well as English, from both North and South. This Companion provides cultural and historical background to contemporary Irish poetry in the contexts of modern Ireland but also in the broad currents of modern world literature. It includes a chronology and guide to further reading and will prove invaluable to students and teachers alike.
      • Review: '... for those of us teaching Irish poetry who have wished for a collection of essays that introduces students to the major themes of the twentieth century as we understand them today, this Companion will not disappoint.' Irish Studies

      Summary
      • Gabriel Garcia Marquez is Latin America's most internationally famous and successful author, and a winner of the Nobel Prize. His oeuvre of great modern novels includes One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera. His name has become closely associated with Magical Realism, a phenomenon that has been immensely influential in world literature. This Companion, first published in 2010, includes new and probing readings of all of Garcia Marquez's works, by leading international specialists. His life in Colombia, the context of Latin American history and culture, key themes in his works and their critical reception are explored in detail. Written for students and readers of Garcia Marquez, the Companion is accessible for non-Spanish speakers and features a chronology and a guide to further reading. This insightful and lively book will provide an invaluable framework for the further study and enjoyment of this major figure in world literature.
      • Review: '... deserves a place too in the libraries of academic institutions where courses are offered on modern Latin American literature. ... maintains the high standards already set by other volumes in the series.' Reference Reviews 'The Cambridge Companion to Gabriel Garcia Marquez does not shun a critical perspective on a major writer. It offers a balanced overview of his work, and thoughtful analysis for a new generation of readers.' Bulletin of Latin American Research '... an engagingly diverse and lively overview of Garcia Marquez's oeuvre, not only offering many new insights into the major texts but also examining the less studied non-fictional works and cinematic adaptations.' Summary
      • 'The Cambridge Companion to Ballet' contains a collection of essays by international writers on the evolution of ballet.
      • Ballet is a paradox: much loved but little studied. It is a beautiful fairy tale; detached from its origins and unrelated to the men and women who created it. Yet ballet has a history, little known and rarely presented. These great works have dark sides and moral ambiguities, not always nor immediately visible. The daring and challenging quality of ballet as well as its perceived 'safe' nature is not only one of its fascinations but one of the intriguing questions to be explored in this Companion. The essays reveal the conception, intent and underlying meaning of ballets and recreate the historical reality in which they emerged. The reader will find new and unexpected aspects of ballet, its history and its aesthetics, the evolution of plot and narrative, new insights into the reality of training, the choice of costume and the transformation of an old art in a modern world.
      • Review: 'This volume has a place in the libraries of dance institutions, but history departments may find it of use, as will anyone with a keen interest in classical and modern dance.' Reference Reviews ' a stimulating read if your curiosity has already been aroused as to how and why ballet is like it is, and whether it has a future as well as a past.' Dance Now" 'a stimulating read if your curiosity has already been aroused as to how and why ballet is like it is, and whether it has a future as well as a past.' Summary
      • This work covers many aspects of the voice, ranging from medieval music to Madonna and beyond. The volume is divided into four broad areas: an overview of singing, performance and opera singing, history of choral music, and performance practices.
      • Ranging from medieval music to Madonna and beyond, this book covers in detail the many aspects of the voice. The volume is divided into four broad areas. Popular Traditions begins with an overview of singing traditions in world music and continues with aspects of rock, rap and jazz. The Voice in the Theatre includes both opera singing from the beginnings to the present day and twentieth-century stage and screen entertainers. Choral Music and Song features a history of the art song, essential hints on singing in a larger choir, the English cathedral tradition and a history of the choral movement in the United States. The final substantial section on performance practices ranges from the voice in the Middle Ages and the interpretation of early singing treatises to contemporary vocal techniques, ensemble singing, the teaching of singing, children's choirs, and a comprehensive exposition of vocal acoustics.
      • Review: "This unique volume is highly recommended for its depth of coverage, uniformly accessible writing, and very reasonable price." Library Journal, August 2000 "With such distinguished authorities as Stephen Banfield, John Rosselli, Stephen Varcoe, and David Mason contributing, the guide covers its wide range of topics accessibly as well as thoroughly for a one-volume work. Those for whom singing is a joyous activity will treasure the book and learn much about the vocal arts that might otherwise take years of personal research." Alan Hirsch, Booklist "The volume is full of valuable knowledge, transmitted with warmth and enthusiasm..." Annabella Bankhouse, The Times Literary Supplement ."..this book appeals to a wide audience with one thing in common: a love of singing." Chamber Music "This companion constitutes a general summary of 'where we have come from' at the turn of the century/millennium and suggests that future generations will have to take popular and world culture much more seriously...will interest singers, voice teachers, music theater teachers and practitioners, musicologists, and those who pursue studies in popular culture and interdisciplinary studies involving music." Choice ..".this book appeals to a wide audience with one thing in common: a love of singing." Chamber Music

      Summary
      • Arnold Schoenberg is one of the most important and controversial figures in 20th-century music. This Companion presents engaging essays on Schoenberg's central works, writings, and ideas over his long life in Vienna, Berlin, and Los Angeles.
      • Arnold Schoenberg - composer, theorist, teacher, painter, and one of the most important and controversial figures in twentieth-century music. This Companion presents engaging essays by leading scholars on Schoenberg's central works, writings, and ideas over his long life in Vienna, Berlin, and Los Angeles. Challenging monolithic views of the composer as an isolated elitist, the volume demonstrates that what has kept Schoenberg and his music interesting and provocative was his profound engagement with the musical traditions he inherited and transformed, with the broad range of musical and artistic developments during his lifetime he critiqued and incorporated, and with the fundamental cultural, social, and political disruptions through which he lived. The book provides introductions to Schoenberg's most important works, and to his groundbreaking innovations including his twelve-tone compositions. Chapters also examine Schoenberg's lasting influence on other composers and writers over the last century.
      • Review: '[This] volume is expertly edited, the chronology, bibliography, footnotes, and index are exemplary, the music examples and tables are irreproachable, and the nineteen individual contributions develop into a coherent book in content, style, and technical presentation. The authors and editors of [this] Schoenberg volume maintain the high standards of the Cambridge Companion series.' Music and Letters ' there are two core chapters, both by Richard Kurth, which fruitfully align (with no attempt at spurious integration) the central aesthetic theme of modernism with fundamental technical topics.' Musical Times" 'there are two core chapters, both by Richard Kurth, which fruitfully align (with no attempt at spurious integration) the central aesthetic theme of modernism with fundamental technical topics.' Summary
      • Galen of Pergamum (AD 129-c.216) was the most influential doctor of later antiquity, whose work was to influence medical theory and practice for more than fifteen hundred years. He was a prolific writer on anatomy, physiology, diagnosis and prognosis, pulse-doctrine, pharmacology, therapeutics, and the theory of medicine; but he also wrote extensively on philosophical topics, making original contributions to logic and the philosophy of science, and outlining a scientific epistemology which married a deep respect for empirical adequacy with a commitment to rigorous rational exposition and demonstration. He was also a vigorous polemicist, deeply involved in the doctrinal disputes among the medical schools of his day. This volume offers an introduction to and overview of Galen's achievement in all these fields, while seeking also to evaluate that achievement in the light of the advances made in Galen scholarship over the past thirty years.
      • Review: '... essential reading for those in and out of the medical field.' SciTech Book News 'Hankinson has produced a very useful and informative volume, which, much in keeping with new appreciation of Galen described by Nutton, addresses the many facets of Galen: physician and medical researcher, to be sure, but also philosopher and man of letters.' Bryn Mawr Classical Review 'This volume is among the most important, not to say useful, volumes that Cambridge University Press has produced. Galen is a myrtle.' Medical History

      Summary
      • A towering figure in American culture and a global twentieth-century icon, Bob Dylan has been at the centre of American life for over forty years. The Cambridge Companion to Bob Dylan brings fresh insights into the imposing range of Dylan's creative output. The first Part approaches Dylan's output thematically, tracing the evolution of Dylan's writing and his engagement with American popular music, religion, politics, fame, and his work as a songwriter and performer. Essays in Part II analyse his landmark albums to examine the consummate artistry of Dylan's most accomplished studio releases. As a writer Dylan has courageously chronicled and interpreted many of the cultural upheavals in America since World War II. This book will be invaluable both as a guide for students of Dylan and twentieth-century culture, and for his fans, providing a set of new perspectives on a much-loved writer and composer.

      Summary
      • Modern studies have hailed Aphra Behn as one of the major figures of the Restoration. Widely known as a playwright, Behn also played a major role in the development of the novel, excelled in poetry & translated libertine & scientific works from the French.
      • Traditionally known as the first professional woman writer in English, Aphra Behn has now emerged as one of the major figures of the Restoration. She provided more plays for the stage than any other author and greatly influenced the development of the novel with her ground-breaking fiction, especially Love-Letters between a Nobleman and his Sister and Oroonoko, the first English novel set in America. Behn's work straddles the genres: beside drama and fiction, she also excelled in poetry and she made several important translations from French libertine and scientific works. This Companion discusses and introduces her writings in all these fields and provides the critical tools with which to judge their aesthetic and historical importance. It also includes a full bibliography, a detailed chronology and a description of the known facts of her life. The Companion will be an essential tool for the study of this increasingly important writer and thinker.
      • Review: "Taken as a group, the essays here assembled make for one of the best volumes to emanate from the excellent Cambridge Companions to Literature series." Choice
