      • ABSTRACTThis research has proposed a modified fruit fly optimization algorithm (MFOA)‐integrated adaptive array antenna (AAA) for the 2.4–2.5 GHz WLAN system. The principal components of the array antenna system encompass four array elements, four band pass filters (BPF), four digital phase shifters, a four‐way power combiner/splitter, a directional coupler, a radio frequency (RF) detector, and a microcontroller unit (MCU). In the realization of the adaptive antenna system, the modified inverted F antenna with a finite ground plane was first innovated and subsequently deployed as the element of the four‐element array antenna. In the study, simulations and experiments were carried out with the four‐element AAAs of two configurations, i.e. the linear and planar array configurations. The simulation and experimental results revealed that the MFOA algorithmic scheme could determine the direction of the maximum arrival signal in an efficient and accurate manner and also was capable of manipulating the radiation pattern in the desired direction. In addition, the MFOA‐integrated four‐element AAA is of compact size (20 mm × 35 mm × 1.8 mm) and operable in the 2.31–2.55 GHz frequency band with omnidirectional radiation pattern and a gain of 1.6 dBi. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.       • AbstractAn appropriate monitoring and control system of the HVAC system is necessary to reduce its energy consumption on the premise of ensure the users’ comfort. A suite of wireless data acquisition system for HVAC system have been developed in this paper to resolve the cabling difficulties existing in the installation process of the sensors distributed at the end of the HVAC system. The acquisition system utilized a low-power and high-performance stm32f103RBT6 microcontroller as the MCU and a wireless transceiver module nRF24L01 and an Ethernet transceiver module W5100 to transfer data. Then the data will be stored in the SQL database and can be observed online. The working process and the practical applications of the acquisition system have been introduced. Finally an acquisition experiment based on the water system of an actual air conditioning system is conducted and the result shows that the wireless data acquisition system works stably and can overcome the difficulties in cabling and signal attenuation.

      • In application systems of the Internet of Things (IoT), real-time monitoring and control of the systems need to be realized with wireless communications from machine to machine (M2M), especially under harsh application scenarios. The data link of the M2M communication has also a critical effect on the system in the application. In this paper, a wireless bi-directional data link for smart temperature recording is reported. The radio frequency hardware employed consists of NRF24L01 wireless transceivers, RFX2401 amplifiers and matching network sand antennas. The microcontroller unit (MCU) is based on the STM32F103VET6 chip, which controls the NRF24L01 by a four-pin serial peripheral interface (SPI) to realize the bi-directional data link, and the sensor data are sampled with 12-bit analogue-to-digital converters (ADCs). The communication is realized as the interrupt request (IRQ) signal of the NRF24L01 changes periodically. A look-up table and a linear optimization method are also implemented to improve the accuracy of ADC data. The bi-directional data link is then applied to a wired heating control system. The results show that temperature data can be transmitted and received over a distance up to 320 m in an open environment and 52 m in an indoor complex environment with the hardware implemented. The real-time temperature data can be displayed on a computer or a handheld device. Wireless M2M communication and control are thus demonstrated.

      • The main challenge during designing a new node is reducing the power consumption as much as possible to maximize the lifetime of wireless sensor network (WSN) since most nodes are powered from a finite source of energy, in general nonrechargeable battery. In this paper we propose a solution to minimize the power consumed by the microcontroller (MCU), which is the main processing component in the node. Our energy power optimization solution is based on two techniques: firstly enhance dynamic power management (DPM) policies by reducing MCU consumption during standby mode; secondly, focus on temperature impact on low power consumption. In this context, a microcontroller dynamic power management (MDPM) algorithm is proposed to improve DPM scheme. This algorithm is deployed on a measurement circuit able to calculate the consumption during the different low power modes in real environments conditions and then selects the better one. These two techniques are combined in a novel way to provide an efficient energy solution for wireless sensor networks nodes. Our solution is validated and qualified with STM32F446RE MCU.

      • AbstractThis paper presents a study on the practical utilization of various microcontroller units (MCU) for model predictive vibration control, using an online active-set quadratic programming solver. The implementation properties of various 32bit MCUs are assessed in experiment. An analysis of memory requirements is made on all investigated MCUs, along with evaluating timing requirements for a simple vibration control problem. These tests show execution time limits, memory footprint, and convergence under different circumstances. The experiments investigate the effects of hot-starting, numerical precision and the use of the floating-point unit (FPU) of the MCU. The results presented in this paper show that the hot-starting technique used with double precision data format is preferable, since computation using single precision numeric format fails to converge on many instances. Although it is tempting to reduce numerical precision to extend the maximal horizon stored in the volatile and nonvolatile memories and to cut execution times, the numerical stability of the investigated online active-set quadratic programming solver is heavily affected. Moreover, it has been found that a built-in FPU does not have significant impact on performance; the presence of this hardware feature does not significantly aid the implementation of model predictive control for the case study presented here.

      • Abstract: With the development of MCUs and the deterioration of the electromagnetic environment, it has led microcontroller unit (MCU) electromagnetic susceptibility (EMS) to transient burst interference to become the focus on academics and enterprises. Most electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) studies of MCUs have not taken into account the contrasting nature of differing architectures. Subsequently, different MCU architectures may possess varying physical parameters, often resulting in different susceptibility EMI outcomes. This paper shall focus on the relationship between MCU architectures and its EMC susceptibility. Upon close examination, test results have shown to exhibit variances in relation to the two types of MCU architectures with regards to susceptibility of electrical fast transients (EFT) burst. Consequently, the underlying reasons resulting in MCU susceptibility variations based on differing MCU architectures shall also be elaborated on further. Highlights: Different architecture of MCUs may own different physical parameters and cause different susceptibility to EMI. This paper focuses the relationship between the architecture of MCUs and its EMC susceptibility. The test results show variations on two kinds of architecture MCUs in susceptibility to EFT burst. The reasons for MCU susceptibility variations on different architectures of MCUs are discussed.

      • Highlights: Genetic algorithm is used to search appropriate shifting steps. The determination of the shifting steps can be done automatically in a MCU. Zernike polynomial is used to examine the performance of genetic algorithm. Abstract: The method of compensation for spatial phase aberration based on an array detector and sequence shifting has a great advantage. But in the method, the calculations of the shifting steps depend on the known optical field distributions, so the method is limited when the accurate distributions cannot be obtained. To overcome this problem, we propose to use genetic algorithm (GA) to search appropriate shifting steps, which can be performed automatically in a microcontroller unit (MCU). Because there is no need of obtaining the field distributions, the system can be simplifies by omitting the two on-off controllers in the optical path. Meanwhile, the detection of a weak optical signal becomes feasible in the new method. Numerical calculations confirm that genetic algorithm can effectively determine the shifting steps and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the array detector can be increased by more than one hundred times compared with the single detector.

The performed experimental studies are used to verify the system. Abstract: The design and implementation studies of a real time monitoring and smart metering system are presented in this study. The proposed design is improved in terms of smart metering infrastructure based on current, voltage, and power measurements. The communication among the string inverter and host PC is performed by the designed ZigBee transceiver system. Sensing circuits are the most significant devices for measuring both current and voltage magnitudes of the systems. The measured data are processed by the microcontroller unit (MCU) and are modulated after signal processing operations for serial communication. Although the transceiver is configured to execute bi-directional communication, unidirectional data flow is performed where the smart metering system transmits data to monitoring substructure. The monitoring software is also implemented in the context of the presented study. The Visual Studio software development kit is used to design and to code the software by using C#. The performed experimental studies showed that the proposed real time monitoring and smart metering system could be exploited to monitor current, voltage and power magnitudes of the string inverters in an efficient way.

      • AbstractThis article presents an embedded active vibration suppression system featuring real-time explicit model predictive control (EMPC) that is implemented on a microcontroller unit (MCU). The EMPC controller minimizes the tip deflection of an aluminum cantilever beam driven by piezoceramic actuators, gaining its feedback from direct position measurements. The output and input performance of the EMPC method is compared to an analogously tuned positive position feedback (PPF) controller. An extensive analysis is provided on the cycle timing and memory needs of the explicit predictive vibration control scheme. The results demonstrate that the EMPC controller may achieve the same vibration suppression results compared to PPF with less input effort, while inherently respecting process constraints. Furthermore, we show that EMPC task execution timing is comparable in the random access memory (RAM) and read only memory (ROM) alternatives, suggesting that numerous current microcontrollers are suitable for EMPC-based active vibration control, in case the prediction model is kept simple.

      • Abstract: An appropriate monitoring and control system of the HVAC system is necessary to reduce its energy consumption on the premise of ensure the users' comfort. A suite of wireless data acquisition system for HVAC system have been developed in this paper to resolve the cabling difficulties existing in the installation process of the sensors distributed at the end of the HVAC system. The acquisition system utilized a low-power and high-performance stm32f103RBT6 microcontroller as the MCU and a wireless transceiver module nRF24L01 and an Ethernet transceiver module W5100 to transfer data. Then the data will be stored in the SQL database and can be observed online. The working process and the practical applications of the acquisition system have been introduced. Finally an acquisition experiment based on the water system of an actual air conditioning system is conducted and the result shows that the wireless data acquisition system works stably and can overcome the difficulties in cabling and signal attenuation.

      • Embedded Processor-Based Self-Test is a guide to self-testing strategies for embedded processors. Embedded processors are regularly used today in most System-on-Chips (SoCs). Testing of microprocessors and embedded processors has always been a challenge because most traditional testing techniques fail when applied to them. This is due to the complex sequential structure of processor architectures, which consists of high performance datapath units and sophisticated control logic for performance optimization. Structured Design-for-Testability (DfT) and hardware-based self-testing techniques, which usually have a non-trivial impact on a circuit's performance, size and power, can not be applied without serious consideration and careful incorporation into the processor design. Embedded Processor-Based Self-Test shows how the powerful embedded functionality that processors offer can be utilized as a self-testing resource. Through a discussion of different strategies the book emphasizes on the emerging area of Software-Based Self-Testing (SBST). SBST is based on the idea of execution of embedded software programs to perform self-testing of the processor itself and its surrounding blocks in the SoC. SBST is a low-cost strategy in terms of overhead (area, speed, power), development effort and test application cost, as it is applied using low-cost, low-speed test equipment. Embedded Processor-Based Self-Test can be used by designers, DfT engineers, test practitioners, researchers and students working on digital testing, and in particular processor and SoC test. This book sets the framework for comparisons among different SBST methodologies by discussing key requirements. It presents successful applications of SBST to a number of embedded processors of different complexities and instruction set architectures.
