      Summary
      • AbstractThe new diselenide-linked mPEGylated starch amphiphilic micelles was developed, which could be disrupted in the presence of 0.1% (v/v) H2O2or 1 mM GSH.AbstractAt present, diselenide bonds have been considered as a novel dual redox-sensitive linkage. Nevertheless, few studies have focused on diselenide-linked polysaccharide as new biological materials. In this work, the diselenide-linked mPEGylated starch amphiphilic copolymers (mPEG-SeSe-St), which combined the biocompatibility of polysaccharide and the stimuli-responsiveness of diselenide linkages, were developed as a novel type of PEG-detachable drug vector for rapid drug release. The amphiphilic design of the mPEG-SeSe-St enabled the formation of self-assembled micelles with spherical core–shell structures in aqueous solution. The data of well-ordered appraisals demonstrated that mPEG-SeSe-St could be disrupted in the presence of a low concentration of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2, 0.1% (v/v)) or glutathione (GSH, 1 mM). The process of diselenide bonds' more rapid degradation than disulfide bonds led to a synergistically enhanced release of loaded anticancer drugs (DOX) in cellular environments. These results, combined with cell viability measurements and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), indicated that mPEG-SeSe-St micelles might have appeared as a refined platform for cancer therapy.

      Summary
      • AbstractBiopolymer-dextrin and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) based biodegradable, biocompatible and amphiphilic crosslinked microgel (c-Dxt/pMMA) has been synthesized for dual drugs (ciprofloxacin and ornidazole) carrier. The morphology, structure and composition of the microgel have been characterized using FTIR and1H NMR spectroscopy, FESEM, EDAX, DLS and TGA analyses. The swelling study and rheological experiments demonstrate gel characteristics ofc-Dxt/pMMA microgel at 37 ± 0.1 °C. Thein vitroresults of cytotoxicity assays revealed that the crosslinked microgel is non-toxic to human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). The microgels could efficiently encapsulate both ciprofloxacin and ornidazole. Hemocompatibility study implies that the synthesized microgel can be safely used for intravenous administration. The simultaneous loading ability and controlled release of ciprofloxacin and ornidazole from the microgel ascertain the dual drugs carrier features ofc-Dxt/pMMA microgel.Graphical abstractHighlights<list-item>•Amphiphilic microgel has been prepared using dextrin and poly(methyl methacrylate).</list-item><list-item>•The developed microgel is biodegradable and biocompatible.</list-item><list-item>•The microgel demonstrates excellent efficacy as dual drugs carrier.</list-item>

      • AbstractAimInvestigation of the geographical origin ofSenecioand the colonization of the Palaearctic including the relationship of life‐history strategy and elevational distribution in the source area and the colonized area.LocationWorldwide with a focus on the Afrotropic and the Palaearctic.MethodsSampling focused on adding species from the Afrotropic to existing datasets ofSenecio. Two nuclear markers and three chloroplast markers were amplified and sequenced. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference were used to infer phylogeny, divergence times, biogeographical history and life‐history strategy evolution.ResultsSeneciooriginated most likely during the Mid to Late Miocene in western southern Africa (WSA). Colonization of the Palaearctic probably started from two different areas. One lineage of mostly annual lowland species seems to have originated in WSA, whereas the other lineage of perennial mountain species originated in mountainous areas of eastern southern Africa or tropical/subtropical East Africa.Main conclusionsSenecioevolved in arid or semi‐arid regions in WSA during a period of ongoing aridification and broad‐scale biome changes at the onset of a winter rainfall regime in the Greater Cape Floristic Region. Life‐history strategy and elevational distribution of the two Palaearctic lineages did not change between the source areas and the colonized areas.

      Summary
      • ABSTRACTA dual-record system (DRS) (equivalently two sample capture–recapture experiments) model, with time and behavioural response variation, has attracted much attention specifically in the domain of official statistics and epidemiology, as the assumption of list independence often fails. The relevant model suffers from parameter identifiability problem, and suitable Bayesian methodologies could be helpful. In this article, we formulate population size estimation in DRS as a missing data problem and two empirical Bayes approaches are proposed along with the discussion of an existing Bayes treatment. Some features and associated posterior convergence for these methods are mentioned. Investigation through an extensive simulation study finds that our proposed approaches compare favourably with the existing Bayes approach for this complex model depending upon the availability of directional nature of underlying behavioural response effect. A real-data example is given to illustrate these methods.

      Summary
      • AbstractConcerns over environmental pollution and ever-increasing energy demand have urged the global community to tap clean-burning fuels among which dimethyl ether is a promising candidate for contribution in the transportation sector. Direct dimethyl ether synthesis from syngas, in which methanol production and dehydration take place simultaneously, is arguably the preferred route for large scale production. In this study, direct dimethyl ether synthesis is proposed in an industrial dual-type fluidized bed reactor. This configuration involves two fluidized bed reactors operating in different conditions. In the first catalytic reactor (water-cooled reactor), the synthesis gas is partly converted to methanol after being preheated by the reaction heat in the second reactor (gas-cooled reactor). A two-phase generalized comprehensive reactor model, comprised of the flow in three different regimes is applied and a smooth transition between flow regimes is provided based on the probabilistic averaging approach. The optimal operating conditions are sought by employing differential evolution algorithm as a robust optimization strategy. The dimethyl ether mole fraction is considered as the objective function during the optimization. The results show considerable dimethyl ether enhancement by 16% and 14% compared to the conventional direct dimethyl ether synthesis reactor and dual-type fixed bed dimethyl ether reactor arrangements, respectively.Highlights<list-item>•Dual-type catalytic fluidized bed reactors for dimethyl ether synthesis is studied.</list-item><list-item>•A two-phase comprehensive model comprised of flow in three regimes is used.</list-item><list-item>•Probabilistic averaging approach is applied for smooth transitions between regimes.</list-item><list-item>•Differential evolution method is employed to determine optimal operating conditions.</list-item><list-item>•Production capacity is remarkably enhanced compared to conventional reactor.</list-item>

      Summary
      • AbstractPlatinum complexes with σ-bonded thioxanthonyl (Tx) ligands exhibit, on irradiation into the Tx π→π* band, dual Tx-based fluorescence and phosphorescence emission with phosphorescence quantum yields of up to 19% in fluid solution at room temperature.AbstractNew square-planar platinum(ii) complexes of the typetrans-[Pt(PEt3)2(Tx)(X)] (X = Br, Cl, I or CN) bearing a σ-bonded thioxanthon-2-yl (Tx) ligand have been prepared and characterised by X-ray crystallography, cyclic voltammetry, and by NMR and electronic absorption and luminescence spectroscopy. The ligand X hardly influences the electronic transitions, which indicates that the relevant molecular orbitals are largely confined to the Pt–Tx chromophore. In agreement with TD-DFT calculations the energetically lowest electronic transition is assigned as the Tx-centred π→π* HOMO → LUMO excitation. All four complexes display dual emission from the σ-bonded Tx ligand atca.450 nm and atca.510 nm, which are assigned as fluorescence originating from the1π*-state and as phosphorescence originating from the3π*-state, respectively. The phosphorescence quantum yield increases with increasing σ-donor strength of the ligand X and reaches a uniquely high value of 18.8% for the chlorido complexPt–Cl. Switching-on of Tx phosphorescence emission by the Pt(PEt3)2(X) fragment goes along with a reduction of the lifetime of the Tx triplet state from several ms in purely organic derivatives toca.2 μs in the complexes.

      • AbstractWe report the quantum cutting (QC) in a Eu3+, Yb3+co-doped Ca12Al14O33phosphor synthesized through combustion method.AbstractWe report the quantum cutting (QC) in a Eu3+, Yb3+co-doped Ca12Al14O33phosphor synthesized through combustion method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements reveal the crystalline nature of the phosphor sample. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the different samples have been studied using 266 and 394 nm radiation, which give an intense red emission at 612 nm due to5D0→7F2transition. The addition of Yb3+in the Eu3+doped sample reduces the emission intensity of Eu3+bands in the visible region continuously whereas in the NIR region, the intensity of the Yb3+band first increases up to 2 mol% and then decreases. This is due to cooperative downconversion energy transfer from Eu3+to Yb3+ions and concentration quenching. The decay curve analyses of different samples reveal an efficient energy transfer from Eu3+to Yb3+ions. The quantum efficiency (QE) has been calculated for different concentrations of Yb3+ions and is estimated to be 197%. The possible mechanisms involved in different transitions and energy transfer processes can be understood using a schematic energy level diagram. The phosphor sample is a potential candidate for enhancing the efficiency of c-Si solar cells.

      Summary
      • AbstractBACKGROUNDMicrobial fuel cells (MFCs) can treat agro‐industrial wastewater, but only a few studies have reported the treatment of winery waste and much work is needed in order to develop this interesting application of MFC technology, in particular in evaluating how the unfavorable COD/N and COD/P ratios may affect the MFC performance. In this work, a dual chamber MFC was used to treat real effluents from wine processing factories.RESULTSThe MFC was not efficient in terms of COD removal, even when nutrients concentration was increased and daily removals which oscillated around 1000 mg L‐1d‐1were observed during the complete experimental period, with COD removals around 17%. Increases in the phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations positively influenced the production of electricity. By increasing the concentration of phosphorus and nitrogen, Coulombic efficiency was increased from 2% to almost 15%, and maximum power density from 105 to 465 mW m‐2.CONCLUSIONSResults demonstrate that electricity can be produced efficiently and that the unbalanced nutrients/COD ratio is a major challenge in the treatment of winery wastewater, in spite of the very high organic load contained in this type of wastewater. © 2015 Society of Chemical Industry
