      Summary
      • The rich bird life of Malawi (ex-Nyasaland) has long been one of the better-documented avifaunas of Africa, since "Belcher" (1930) and then "Benson and Benson" (1977). This book brings the picture up-to-date, with detailed scientific accounts of the 650 species known (including nearly 100 migrants from Eurasia). For each there are sections on distribution, ecology, status and movements, conservation, breeding seasons (where applicable) and taxonomy, the whole based on extensive fieldwork supported by some 700 published references. There are clear atlas maps for all but vagrants, as well as details of ringing recoveries and a gazetteer of 400 localities. In 80 pages, the introductory chapters review such topics as vegetation and major bird habitats, biogeography, conservation and a history of ornithological exploration in Malawi. 16 pages of color photos illustrate the habitats of Malawi as well as a dozen of the more interesting bird species. This book is not intended as a field guide (there are few illustrations of birds), but as a handbook and distribution atlas, highlighting the status, distribution and conservation of each species.
      • Review: "I heartily recommend Malawi as a varied and rewarding birding destination. It is certainly a place that I hope to revisit before too much longer." - Fat Birder"

      Notes
      • Includes bibliographical references (p. 614-632) and index.
      Summary
      • This book is the capstone of the first comprehensive state-wide survey of Arizona's breeding birds. More than 700 surveyors, mainly volunteers, reported a total of 376 bird species during the 1993-2000 field seasons. Of those species, 283 were confirmed as breeding and 18 additional species were suspected of potentially nesting in the state during the atlas survey period. The atlas provides a breeding distribution snapshot for each of Arizona's nesting bird species at the end of the twentieth century. Bird populations change constantly due to environmental factors and human activities. The data compiled in this book will serve as a baseline against which to judge future changes. It also provides a wealth of natural history information. Each of the 270 two-page species accounts contains a colour photograph of the species and a range map summarising the breeding distribution records collected during the atlas survey period. The accompanying descriptive text and graphs provide nesting habitat information and a timeline chronicling each bird's breeding habits and migratory status in Arizona. Additional chapters describe atlas methods, results, and Arizona ornithological history, as well as topography, climate, and habitat diversity, which ultimately govern bird species distribution in the state. Useful to land managers and biologists, the atlas will also be a resource for birders and educators and will increase public awareness of Arizona's vast avian life.
      • Review: "This capstone atlas is an important resource for field biologists as well as a usefull refernce for birders, educators, and the interested public. With full-color maps and photographs throughout, this hefty tome is a publishing bargain."

      • Includes bibliography p.555-586 and index.
      Summary
      • This book presents detailed accounts of the more than 750 species known (among which there are 100 migrants from the northern hemisphere) in Zambia. Extensive fieldwork by the authors and many collaborators means that the maps (for all species except vagrants) present a clear picture of distribution in this country of some 750,000 sq. km. The text complements the maps, with a synthesis of what is known of ecology, status, movements, breeding seasons, taxonomy and conservation concerns. This book is not intended as a field guide (there are few illustrations of birds), but as a handbook and distribution atlas, highlighting the status, distribution and conservation of each species. More than 900 published references are cited, and there are details of ringing recoveries and a gazetteer of more than 800 localities. In 70 pages, the introductory chapters review the vegetation and major bird habitats, biogeography, migration, conservation and the history of ornithological exploration in Zambia. Sixteen pages of colour photos illustrate the habitats of Zambia as well as over a dozen of the more typical bird species (including the endemic Black-cheeked Lovebird and Chaplin's Barbet). Zambia is at the centre of the Zambezian region of endemism, and its woodlands, dry forests and dambos harbour 57 of the 64 bird species confined to this biome. This is the sixth account of the birds of Zambia (ex-Northern Rhodesia) since the first (Pitman 1934), and it updates and expands its immediate predecessor The Birds of Zambia (Benson, Brooke, Dowsett & Irwin, 1971).

      Summary
      • Of all the wild birds, none are more closely associated with man than the sparrows. In this book, his fifth on sparrows, Denis Summers-Smith sets out to explore this relationship from both sides: how the birds have exploited man and in his turn how much, and in many diverse ways, man has been affected by these birds that so obtrude on our lives. This is a book not only for bird-watchers, but also anyone with an interest in our natural environment.

      Summary
      • The first comprehensive field guide to all raptors and owls recorded in Georgia (Caucasus region), describing 45 species including breeding birds, seasonal residents, migrants, and rare visitors. It includes accurate and practical information on identification, behaviour, confusing species, habitat, food source, nesting, and population status of each species within Georgia. There are over 400 colour illustrations depicting plumage variation for each species according to age, sex, and race, including behaviour and habitat compositions pertinent to the region. The innovative layout is specifically designed for accurate use in the field, dedicating each page-spread to a single species. For quick reference there are dynamic raptor-flight arrangements accompanied by captions for keying-out comparative information about plumage according to age, wing posture, and flight type. In addition, there are colour distribution maps for every species according to its status within Georgia as a breeding bird, a seasonal resident, a year-round resident, or a passage migrant. 'This is a super little book and I commend the NHBS for carrying it. There is plenty of information and good illustrations showing different views and ID features making it a very useful book to carry when you are birding in Europe - its small enough not to take up much luggage [or even pocket] space yet has the majority of raptors and owls you could see anywhere in Europe. The book is compact so this review will be too. Buy it - you will help conservation and have a very useful addition to your travelling library' - www.fatbirder.com, June 2005. 'Very good quality illustrations cover the adult appearance, with smaller annotated illustrations showing age, sex and flight details. The accompanying text, in two languages, give brief descriptions of the species' characteristics, habits and habitats. An excellent book for anyone travelling to that part of the world' - "BTO News 259", July-August 2005.

      Summary
      • The story of a remarkable journey by one of the world's greatest nature writers across five continents to track down every species of the crane family. Once regarded as messengers from heaven, cranes form part of the ancient myth and legend of every country in which they appear. Today, they evoke the retreating wilderness and the vanishing habits upon which they depend. The enormous spans of their migrations are a symbol of their struggle to survive and a stimulus to international conservation efforts. Illustrated with colour plates by the renowned American wildlife artist Robert Bateman, "The Birds of Heaven" captures the beauty of a vanishing species and the dilemma of a planet in ecological crisis.
      • Review: "Our greatest modern nature writer in the lyrical tradition" Stephen Jay Gould, New York Times; "Peter Matthiessen is beyond dispute the best nature writer working today" Peter Farb; "Matthiessen is an endangered species: a writer of great integrity, who lives the life he writes, and yet whose scathing critique of our all-consuming, all-exploiting society is also realistic" James Robertson, Scotland on Sunday; "One of our best writers" Don Delillo
      • Review: In this book, one of the world's best living nature writers recounts his journeys in search of the crane. In the introductory chapter, Matthiessen makes precise taxonomic distinctions (informing us, for example, that despite similarities of appearance the crane is not a member of the same family as the heron), and tells the reader why he thought it important to travel so far to view the 15 remaining species of crane in their natural habitats. Then he goes on to describe the varying contexts in which the birds live and are perceived. Not only does he visit China and Japan, he finds cranes in Tibet and Mongolia before following them to India, Australia, Africa and America. In each location, Matthiessen talks with the small number of individuals who, like him, work for the preservation of ancient species threatened with extinction. The challenge is thrown out to the reader: 'Are you a citizen of this planet, or merely a consumer?' As we have come to expect from this author, (whose previous works include The Snow Leopard, In The Spirit of Crazy Horse and The Cloud Forest), the writing is vivid and carefully crafted, peopled with interesting characters and situations of passionate immediacy. Yet it is a humbling work. The fragility of the cranes' existence is brought home to us as he reports first from one country, then another, and always the same tale - yes, they are still here, occasionally even flourishing, but no-one can guarantee tomorrow as this project or that eats up more land. The unspoken conclusion of this book, as of all Matthiessen's travelogues, is that unless we begin, without delay, to control the cancer of human population growth, we and the carrion insects will be the only creatures still moving amidst the bones. Summary
      • More than 300 species of birds have been reported from the Blue Ridge Mountain province, an area stretching from south-central Pennsylvania to northern Georgia. This book describes the region's birds and tells birdwatchers where to go to find them. It is a valuable resource for vacationers and casual birders as well as for serious birdwatchers and professional zoologists. At the heart of the book is a detailed guide to the best birding localities in the region. Marc Simpson describes more than 300 sites, including recreation areas, overlooks, campgrounds, picnic areas, and hiking trails. For each site, he lists the species most likely to be seen there as well as rare or unusual birds that the persistent birder might find. He includes notes on the geography and plant life of each site and provides information on highway access and accommodations. Simpson also supplies a special list of sites accessible to those with handicaps. Finally, the book includes an annotated checklist describing in detail the seasonal occurrence, habitat selection, relative abundance, elevation ranges, and relevant history for each bird species reported from the region. Additional resources include a suggested reading and reference list, organized by state, and a list of phone numbers and addresses for the Blue Ridge Parkway districts, for National Forest offices, and for state and national parks. The book is illustrated with drawings by noted bird artist H. Douglas Pratt, and it includes detailed maps for most of the major birding sites.
