Other titles
  • Cosmographie universelle.
  • A Paris : chez Pierre L'Huillier, rue Sainct Iaques, à l'Oliuier. 1575
Physical description
2 v. (v.1: [32], 467, [1], leaves, [2] folded leaves of plates; v.2: [8], 469-914, 912-936, [1], 903-1025, [1], [18] leaves, [2] folded leaves of plates) : ill., maps, ports. ; 38 cm. (fol.)
  • Vignette on title pages: Publisher's device (olive tree, including initials P L, for: Pierre L'Huillier).
  • One of two states, both published in Paris, by different publishers.
  • Foliated continuously. Leaf no. 468 omitted in foliation, but very likely reserved for the blank leaf following leaf 467 in v.1. Numerous errors in foliation, including in v.2 leaf 906 verso, 2nd count, numbered: "907" and leaf 907 misnumb.: "908".
  • In v.2, leaves 903-914, 1st count; 912-913, 2nd count; 916-922, 1st count; 924-933, 1st count; and 935-936, 1st count, marked with an asterisk. However, these leaves are not cancellantia; rather, the asterisk is an indication that the text of the section on Europe extended beyond its anticipated length, by altogether 37 leaves (the missing asterisk on leaves 914, 2nd count; 915, 1st count; 923, 1st count; and 934, 1st count, is to be considered an error).
  • Plates (maps) unnumbered.
  • Text divided into four sections, corresponding to the four continents; first section not designated as such; second to fourth sections marked as: Tome second (v.1: leaf 149); Tome troisieme (v.2: leaf 469); and: Tome quatrieme (v.2: leaf 903, 2nd count).
